No body pay attention to Gadfly. He is just another pissed off old school chicken band hating ham radio operator.. yup you can tell by my screen name i am also a ham operator.. i live it it's a great hobby but i came from the "chicken band" and still use my CB everyday.

Gad has been banned from many CB forums because he doesn't know how to get along well with others and loves to badmouth almost all CB operators..

Gadfly makes good points but does come off as abrasive. I also do both ham and CB. My 2 cents I could give 2 ##### less what you do as long as you're not interfering with my ability to communicate, then we won't have any problems. 900,000-tons-of-steel I wouldn't bank on the FCC having to "witness" all altercations before taking action. All too often truck drivers receive FCC warning letters after being tracked down for talking on the 10 meter band where phone is not allowed. I highly doubt the tracker was on the phone with the FCC in Gettysburg to "get on down here and check out this intruder rolling down the interstate talking voice on 28.085 MHz". True some that buy the exports don't know what the band switch is for and don't know where they're transmitting, or can't figure out why their SWR is so high due to being on the wrong band. It's a shame more don't understand their transceiver and how it works. You'd be amazed at how much money you could save, and how far you really could get out, without the need for a bunch of power, and perhaps even spare yourself the possibility of a run-in with the man. Looking back, the FCC created this mess by picking one of the worst bands to use as a poor mans business band.

Nobody cares what CBers do except Hammers that don't have a life. For the record: I DO NOT GET IN THE HAM BANDS AND DON'T APPROVE OF THOSE WHO DO. But now I do occasionally go above 40 a ways and below 1 even more often! I agree with Turbo that you need to understand what a export radio is and how it works before you go buy one and start keying up!!! I mean have a little respect for the rules enough to stay out of the ham band!

I got a export radio and I flip the switch and I never hear any one . I just don't see what all the hype is all about. I don't even use the sideband .

All the FCC can do based on reports they receive is send a warning letter. They can't level enforcement action without witnessing the act. A report of an act by a civilian (ham or not) is NOT considered a witnessed event even if it's recorded. An authorized agent from the bureau MUST witness the illegal act before any enforcement action is taken against the individual.

I love SSB. Shoot skip all the time, sometimes barefoot (no power other than the radio), sometimes with fire in the wire. All depends on the location. If I can make the trip barefoot I don't use the box. If I can't make the trip barefoot I throw the switch but I don't run more than 500 watts at any time even when talking skip. You're right, when conditions are right you don't need a lot of power. Talked to the U.K. a few times barefoot but most times it requires a little juice from my rig.

Depends on when and where you flip the switch...10 meters isn't always open, and not all of 10 meters will be voice. Some parts of it are beacons and code, you'll hear mostly a bunch of beeps. Typically in the lower 300 MHz of the 10 meter band.

Even if they only send out warning letters for first time offenses, they now have your info on file and can decide to drop by and do an audit at any time. Plus once you receive the letter you're supposed to call back and acknowledge. Even if no fines are issued, I prefer to fly under the radar, not be a part of it.

Yep, they can stop by but most of us are not in the home since we're on the road and the chance we'll be in the same spot as the infraction at any given time with any degree of predictability (dedicated and/or routes are the exception) is going to prove a tough task for the feds. Even if we're in the home, unless they witness activity there's not much they can do if one "isn't home" (referring to answering the door). I know that some trucking companies receive letters from the feds based on field reports from hams who -think- the truck that just passed them is the scofflaw they hear but I'm only aware of a case or two where repeat violations by drivers resulted in additional and more severe actions.
