I just bought a PC Miler 550 GPS unit and cannot find from where to download map updates. Customer service is useless. I am seriously considering returning it. Bought it only because my company deducts the cost from my pay over time. Lousy display, volume not loud enough, screen will tell you to turn one way while voice tells you to turn the opposite way (screen has been right so far). Does anyone know how to get map updates?

Yeah, I found it this morning but the software will not install correctly and I notice they do not list Windows 8, which I have, on the pull down menu listing operating systems. Stay really far away from this GPS unit, folks.

According to their software my maps are from 2010 and there are no updates available. I find this very hard to believe. This evening the unit locked up on me while I was driving. Man, I hate this thing. Saving up for a Garmin or Rand McNally.

You are reading the wrong thing if you are referring to a 550 model. That reference to 2010 maps is for any model with a "40" in the model number (440,540,740.)

The latest map update for your 550 was put up in November 2012 and is a good mapset.

CoPilot Central works on the 64-bit version of Windows 8 Pro that I tested it on. I do not know if that holds true on every variety of Windows 8.

So, to put this runaway thread back on its tracks, here is what you can do:

    1. Go to the "About CoPilot" screen in the "Setting Menu" and read the line that says "Data: GRD_ALK.NA.2012.02...." If it does NOT say "NA.2012.02" in that number, then YES, you need to update it for free with the CoPilot Central app.

    2. What flavor of Windows 8 do you have? Have you installed, or tried to install, the CoPilot Central app?

    3. If you got the 550 from me, then call in and I will connect to your screen and do it for you.

I have the GPS unit connected to my computer and all of the maps are dated 3/3/2010. The unit is a 550, I checked on the back. I installed CoPilot Central 2.0 and just downloaded the November 2012 maps to my computer and now I am trying to figure out how to get them into the GPS unit. The directions are not very intuitive. Thanks for your help.

Ok. I am confused again then. There is nothing that you have to do to transfer the maps to the GPS from CoPilot Central after they download. After you click "download" it will download them first and then automatically say "TRANSFERRING" in the same box where it said "DOWNLOADING." Please refer to where I put the big red arrow in picture here:
    cpcentral_2.jpg

When it has completed transferring them, it will just show the red CoPilot logo in that box.

TURN THE POWER OFF for the GPS and then unplug it from the computer. Then turn the GPS on and the maps are done. You can verify that they went on in the "About CoPilot" screen mentioned in the earlier post.

Wow. The file that I downloaded, which according to tech support is the correct map file, is not even the same type of file as those in the GPS. The new one is a PDS file, the existing files in the maps folder of the GPS unit are STB and CFG files. The support guy said he is not sure if they support Windows 8 but he will consult someone on his end and get back to me. I hit the road at 4AM tomorrow morning. I don't need this crap. I'll say it again: Get a Rand McNally, a Garmin... whatever. Do not get a PC*Miler.

For whatever reason they never transferred into the GPS unit and were stored in my laptop. See my prior post, I was on the phone with customer service and the technician is consulting someone to see what is going on. I have the Windows 8 64-bit OS. Needless to say, they should have their software updated for the new OS by now.

So just using CoPilot Central normal method did not work? They have you manually copying files? You can do it by manually copying, but it leaves a lot of room for user errors, or unclear communication on how to do it that way.
