Good luck to you just a heads up don't waste your time applying to Moran Transportation in Bensenville. They offered me $16 an hour straight time and have to get hazmat. Yeah right.

Thanks. Actually, I may accept $16.00/hour for my first year because it seems to be more than what a rookie can make per hour OTR--though, the Hazmat requirement kinda does make it suck; and, as you know living in the Chicago area like me, $16/hour is not really a 'living wage'.

I can see with your seven years trucking that this amount is too low which I agree. Most every industry for essentially my entire life is all about 'How can we pay the employee less?'. I have seen many of my parents friends laid off in their 50s never to really work again to make room for cheaper persons in their 20s. Hell, in my 40s I am essentially not wanted--well, except by CRE, Swift, Werner, Knight, et al.

Are you O/O? I hear Forward Air and Towne Frieght are hiring and they are both just up Route 83 from Bennyville. The bomb would be to get a 'there-and-back' linehaul at OD or Conway or YRC or other. With 7 years, I am sure ABF would give you a try-out.

    -----------------------

I just got off the phone with Old Dom on 47th--applicants are required to have Hazzy at the time of application....

The $16 an hour was because I'm experienced normally he starts drivers at $15 an hour straight. 10-4 on not being a livable wage. The problem I have with getting hired at a good company is several of the outfits I worked for in the past are long since out of business. So my experience can't be verified. I applied once at Blackhorse Carriers for an account they were advertising $21 an hour for with overtime after 40 and that's what happened.

Okay. I must make note-to-self to keep all my pay stubs and a copy of my B/Ls/Manifests. I've seen Blackhorse around--they want three years experience according to one of their ads on craigslist I read. I believe Old Dom and Conway is straight time until after 40 also......I cannot recall. Anyway, what scares me from LTL is that I may be fed 60 hours one week, 10 the next.

With the LTLs wanting hazzy and with what I typed above, I am flipping a coin between a ma & pa/outlaw outfit or Schneider. The Schneider recruiter I am trying to call is again no answering his phone--amazing how some things never change. The 'Field Recruiter' pulled a favor and ask this recruiter to call me--and he did--when I was not home......
:biggrin_25510: In fifteen attempts over three months, I cannot get him on the phone when I initiate the call. Meanwhile, the 'Hiring Open House' banner flyies at the Kostner yard....but I digress...

    ----------------------------------

I have now given up on trying to stay local save LTL work. Frankly, I really do not want to bump docks with a 53-footer in the city anyhow. I will miss gardening, but oh well. I have read the new HOS rules, thankyou TTR for enlightening me, and how this nukes a day of work for truckers whom work nights.

I am in a complete state of panic to make as much money as I can before illegal aliens are allowed to drive trucks because 'it is a job that Americans won't do'. Hence, this kinda puts an outlaw company a bit ahead of a safety company currently regarding my decision process.

I hope the new rules don't take affect on account that I work nights and would have to carry my hours every week or so. I have learned that if you can't get in contact with a recruiter for a second time, don't bother. They lost intrest in you after the first time they missed you. Its a shame really. Schneider wasn't all that bad back in 02-04 when I worked for them. Just be safe in who you go with. Safety is key.

Fiddle Sticks, with all respects to yourself and all/any other drivers, are you really sure that you want to get into trucking? The pay really is terrible, and for the amount of work and responsibility that is thrown into the already meager pot, well, it really isn't worth it. These jobs really are so awful now that they are easily replaced by just about anything; even in this supposed "down" economy. Regardless of what anybody tells you, you'll be lucky if you make $30,000 your first year (maybe even less) and MAYBE $40,000 after that after a couple years. Poverty wages. And you're right on about the "illegals". In case you and other readers don't already know; the corporations have completely bought off our Federal Govt. (BOTH parties, folks) and have given the Feds. specific instructions to allow illegal immigration to happen; up to and including the Border Patrol to look the other way up until recently. Why would this happen? Cheap, obediant workers! BTW, they are now the "official" majority in most areas in the western U.S. Wages have dropped dramatically as a result. And some people still think that they're just pickin' strawberries. Sorry to rant but..darnit! Oh well. Good luck Fiddle!

You mean to tell me that making $39,568 this year as a rookie i was in the higher percentage range of alot of rookies? Now to be honest this is the most i have made in quite a few years. To make close to this amount the year before i was holding down three jobs...Forklift operator, bouncer during the week at
a club in philly then a doorman/bouncer/host at a hookah lounge in Baltimore on the weekends. This by far is the most peaceful job i have had in years. no bosses yelling at you, dont have to deal with pain in the ### co-workers, and dealing with the shippers and receivers are no problem at all. How many other jobs out there would i be able to wake up with my office right there, new scenery everyday, a company that trust me with a tractor costing $100,000+ new?
I was born to do this career, it just took longer then expected for it to find me. Knowing that my cdl can get me into so many companies because there is such a drivers shortage out there opens up alot of doors to making even more money. Alot of negative talk out there that i tend to try and stay away from.

Yep I came into trucking from the nightclub bouncer deal I was in as well. I do agree on the peaceful part, I don't miss dealing with drunken morons one bit. As far as the OP, you use these mega carriers like they use you, that's the only way I can hold my nose and work for them. You get that 1-3 years (usually 1) and run like a bat out of hell into a local job. They are all the same buddy, Swift, CRST, Werner, Pumpkin Fleet, GTI, May, Market Transport, CR England, Central Reefer smokers, e.t.c. Don't ever get into a fleese purchace like you mentioned, they try their hardest to get people into those because that's the only way they can retain drivers is to get them into some kind of contract.
