Do you think this is true? I want to become a trucker but that scares me. I guess it's all about how much physical activity you do and what you eat. Your opinions? Thanks.

Get a refrigerator or an electric cooler, bring food from home to avoid eating mc d's and other truckstop heart attack food places. Bring fruit and veggies to snack on. Makes a big difference.

All good advise but sitting in the drivers seat for 10-12 hrs a day is harder on you than the food.

Don't smoke. Don't eat fast food often. Brisk walk 3 or 4 times a week for at least 30 minutes; around the truckstop, rest area, etc. Truckers live a nomal life span; but truckers can choose the quality of that life span by doing the simple things I mentioned. Doesn't hurt to take a multi-vitamin, 81mg aspirin, cinnamon capsule, daily.

you worry too much, just live your life and whatever happens, happens. In this world you have no control on your life expectancy, you could be the worlds healthiest person and die in a car accident or of cancer...do what makes you happy in life and don't worry about it.

Park towards the back of T/S's instead of fighting to get a front space. If your waiting to load/unload walk around a bit, if permited of course. If your on paper logs and stop, you have to log 15 min, it doesn't take that long to use the restroom, walk around for the remaining time.
Choose salad instead of fries, baked instead of fried. Whole wheat or multi-grain instead of white. Apple or other fruit instead of candybars or chips. Drink water, fruit juice or milk instead of soda or coffee ( hard one for me to, I need my caffiene).
Some of the T/S's have excersize rooms, use them. Of course you can choose to go flatbed and that will give you some excersize. Just because you sit behind a wheel instead of behind a desk is no reason that you can't CHOOSE to eat right and exersize and have healthy habits.
Yes it's easier to grab fastfood and not think about it, but even McD's has some healthier choices than a big Mac, large fries and soda.CondoCruiser and Tonythetruckerdude Thank this. -
I know drivers that are in their 70's and still driving, some in their mid to late 60's. It's all about how you live and some luck involved, but that's in any profession. I mean you can walk out your door one morning and get struck in the head by a meteorite. Don't sweat it too much, when it's your time, it's your time.

I suspect the biggest factor here is the smoking aspect ... think about it. If a driver smokes [heavily] in the confines of a tiny truck, he's "smoking" and breathing in nasty crap even between cigarettes. And far too many drivers (as a percentage of the work-force) chain smoke due to the fact there is nothing to restrict the amount of time you can smoke while you spend virtually 22 hours a day in your own "world" where you can smoke as often as you can afford.

All good advice from those above...1 question though, is there a family history of heart disease , diabetes , high BP, etc in your family? If so, then all of those suggestions become that much more important. If you decide to do OTR try your best to get plenty of cardiovascular exercise , walking at least 30 minutes a day to keep your heart rate up. Truck driving is a sedentary occupation for the most part, especially OTR, but its possible to get the exercise in..you just have to make up your mind to stick with it and make it as important as your daily pre-trip inspection.
