Man, the only thing I can say is I am glad you got them and not me! I am not 50 hours away from finishing my 240 and will complete a reset tonight so I can run my butt off and get it done this weekend, well as long as the loads are there. That is the down side of running with a dedicated guy I got all my 40 backs finished before my midterm just taken me the full 6 weeks to get all my hours done, but I have learned a TON and have enjoyed the training experience. Now just looking forward to getting out there on my own next week and getting some money for myself. This new hourly pay for students sucks hard when you pretty much run between KC and Memphis.

Sounds like you are having an incredibly frustrating experience when it comes to mentors. I admire the hell out of you for sticking to it in spite of all of it.
I know this sounds bad, but "everybody getting along" and "multi-culture-ism" only goes so far. I'm all about getting along with folks, but this fellow seems to have crossed the line. I know that he probably has a work visa, but what in the hell does it say about Swift when they, not only hire someone who is yet a legal citizen, but make him a trainer as a bonus? I'm scratching my head on this one. With all his family reunions, how does he get any freight moved? My Spanish is limited to ordering at Taco Bell, so I would at least ask for someone who understands me when I have a question. That's what a mentor is for, correct? Answering questions.
Again Doc, I admire you for sticking it out. I would have been in some county jail by now. Stick with it and you will be solo before you know it.scottied67, DocWatson and Bigdubber Thank this. -
Thanks for the positive words. There's even more to it but it was little trivial things that I just let go. Give one more example: during our discussion that last day in the truck he had his phone word int the truck stereo. The stereo doesn't work otherwise. He started cranking up the mariachi music. Now, I can listen to almost anything within reason but for some reason mariachi music drives me nuts. Literally. It almost makes me go nuts like the guy that lost his baseball in There's Something About Mary. I crawl out of my skin and want to punch somebody at the sound of accordian. So I start to put my headphones oand he asks "what? You don't like this music?". I said I hated it like chalk on a chalkboard. I put my headphones on and he then cranks the music up so i can hear it over the music in my earbuds. By itself just annoying but given the totality of the circumstances...
So I'm off on a bus to Denver. Swift is buzzing me on a 12 hour trip up to Denver tonight, leaving within the hour. The cab ride from the termnal to the downtown bus station cost me $55 but I should be getting reimbursed. Tomorrow I up see the driver coordinator at the Denver terminal and I go to a motel tomorrow. On Thursday at some point I should be meeting up with my 3rd and final mentor.
I did get some delicious homemade burritos that a woman sold out of some heqted uniscottied67 and Bigdubber Thank this. -
h Unit in the back of her SUV. Was delicious. Last night I took the shuttle back to the Comfort Inn and made it next door an hour before closing to Linns Chinese buffet. $16 later I was full but the food was pretty much tasteless. Not sure why someone recommended this place. I overate because I paid not because of taste.
My Washington driver coordinator called this afternoon and told mr that I would mostikely be hooking up with my new and final mentor this Thursday. I take the bus ride tonight, take another cab to the Denver terminal tomorrow morning and speak to that driver coordinator. Then im in a hotel there tomorrow night and back to the denver terminal Thursday morning. He's a smoker too so that may be good.
I lived out in The Republic of Boulder years ago working for MCI WorldCom regulatory legal dept until Bernie Ebbers took away our free coffee and life savings. Denver and Colorado were a good time for the most part. I still have an ex that lives out there in Arvada near Denver and she has been wanting to get together. So that may be an option for tomorrow night.
Funny thing about that, way back when we dated about ten years ago she was pretty heavy and I was somewhat thin. The roles have since reversed as she lost a ton of weight and I gained it, kind of like a reverse metabolic Grease with a now fatter Danny.
Not sure how the mentoring would have turned out had it been another company. I have nothing to reference this against. Ny personal experience has been that my mentors are in it for the money alone. At least my thoughts. But I keep in contact with other friends in training with Swift currently and they have had a good experience so far. So who knows.
My last mentor is calling me now. I ignored the call but I better call him back and see what's up..Last edited: Mar 5, 2013
Bigdubber, Kickstand-117 and scottied67 Thank this. -
That was an unexpected call. I spoke to ny old mentor assuming the worst about the call to be. I figured he was going to either give me #### about the statement I wrote or crap about the spare key I had forgotten I had. Surprisingly he called to check up on me to see how I was doing. Odd but kind of a nice closure to that last chapter in Swift OTR training.
Was just offered more burritos for sale from a woman seated on the bus as I made my way down the aisle to the back of the bus. Had to decline as I had reached my burrito quota of 3 for today.
On to Denver to start this new adventure.Last edited: Mar 5, 2013
scottied67, Bigdubber, Jakaby and 1 other person Thank this. -
You are very brave eating burritos before a long bus ride.

Funny conversation I remember having with the old trainer that day prior to me getting off the truck. He was asking me where my family roots were, in a broken english kind of way. I was tellin him my family was fully Irish and he was completely confused. He did say something about big beers so maybe he was somewhat in the know. He asked me where Ireland was located and I told him Ireland was near England. It was a small island I said. He sat for a moment pondering this info and then replied...
"So, Iceland is very cold then, no?". -
Good to hear u had a good mentor. They are out there just not on my zipcode apparently -
What happens if the 3rd mentor doesn't work out?

The irony- you keep getting offered burritos on a trip you are taking because of a bad experience with someone who has probably eaten a lot of burritos while listening to the mariachi music. I think me and him would have had a come-to-Jesus meeting over the radio selection. Family reunions in LA and San Antonio, mariachi music, citizenship tests, burritos, and bus rides to denver. The only thing missing here is a piñata with a buddy hook hanging by the CB and a statue of The Virgin Mary on top of the Qualcomm.
The picture I keep getting in my head is Julio, Fred Sanford's next door neighbor. I saw Grady and bubba, they were team driving for CREBigdubber Thanks this.
