Love the make believe quotes of "office staff", I've been on both sides of the dispatch window and it amuses me when drivers blame dispatch for everything that goes on. Dispatch doesn't have time to pick and choose runs as they get their ### handed to them if freight don't move. They also get chewed for low driver retention as it costs MORE money to have a driver trained and such then to keep the driver. The company would rather have 50 drivers then keep replacing them with 500 as it leaves them in a bind when there isn't a driver in the truck and they have loads to get to customers. There are ######### dispatchers and there are knuckle head drivers. How does an O/O only make 19k? I can tell you how, piss poor money handling and buying a truck with to big a payment. There are TONS of other options even with bad credit, to get a truck that is solid and won't break the bank in payments. Not looking around is the failure of the owner operator. It is your job to make sure your truck is affordable, solid, and you handle your money. I was an O/O for 7 years, still had decent home time( 1 week off for every 3.5 to 4 out) got plenty of miles because I kept in constant contact with my DM as well as monitoring freight patterns, making sure I was open to hauling freight when it busiest and took my days off mid week instead of trying to be in on weekends. If you are not generating enough money by yourself, then you entertain other aspects, drive team, become a trainer. All good money there. You can quit any time ya like, but it is also up to YOU to chase after the loads, don't sit around waiting for dispatch to hand you something. Be a pest, call other terminals when your still on the road, the freight is as plentiful as the complaints of how poor this job is. And before anyone asks, I only sold my truck to pay for my wife's medical bills, otherwise I'd have never left.

 

hey longhaul, let me tell ya a short story, I while working for Knight called a terminal to get a load, my DM got pissed, took the load off and I sat in Fontana for two days, took my stuff and left, so i say, they are all liars cheats and should be sent to live in Canada!

 

and you didn't take this up with the higher ups because..... I did this numerous times and my DM had no problem with that when I told him I was gonna check with the next terminal if he didnt have any thing lined up before I got there. So does that make the DM i worked with a lair and a cheat? Sounds to me your someone who to thin skinned and to self righteous to do follow ups as quitting is easier.

I was a DM for two years, never once lied to my drivers. There more going on then drivers know in that office. It was my DM that trained me when I moved to the office. If you think all DMs lie then YOU sir are the idiot and only see what you wish to see. You assume you know what a DM is doing or not doing. My DM had the 2nd highest driver retention in the company at that time at well over 70%, you don't get that by lying to people. My own was 68% before I left Knight for what I'm doing now. I told my drivers to take charge, if they find a load TAKE IT, I didn't take it personally and the load was tacked on to them, which increased their miles, which made my group of drivers miles higher which made my supervisor happy and everybody won. So while your entitled to your one side of the window opinion, after being on both sides of the window, hate tell ay this, my opinion is better informed.

 

I wouldn't do this for that low of pay. I made more than that my first year solo. I made just under $62K last year, in only my 4th full year. It can be done, but unfortunately is not the normal. I feel if I can't gross, at the minimum, $1000/week it's not worth being away from home and friends.

 

Notice one thing Bowl, Professional-Trucker, keeps leaving companies and having to start at the bottom AGAIN each time. What does he expect, if you keep quitting and starting an ground level, you never get any where.

so longhaul what exactly is a dispatcher in these modern days? paid to baby sit loads?(my dispatcher from my last company literally told me that)LOAD PLANNERS are the ones with some responsibility in there. im all ears on what goes on in the office other than office politics and chatty conversations about nothing... no disrespect just curious
