Hey guys I need a little help here, to make a long story short my girl said if you go back OTR not to come back. So I have a road test for a quad axle dump truck, never even been in one. She said it was 4 on top 4 on the bottom? Anyone know what that is? So far I've been only drive 10 speed freight shakers, one new and one held together with duct tape. I'm going to search youtube and wait for your alls advice. That is all I know

Not idea what she meant. the transmission should work just as any other truck.
if you pass the test and you need any help contact me, I'll help you with whatever you need
however the operation of the truck, is not only the limited to only shifting gears
there are other things you need to know about, before you even get on the truck
be very very careful with the speed. try to take turns 5 miles slower than you would on out on an 18 wheeler
    specially if you are loaded
dumping and the operation of the PTO are very important things too
If you ever forget to lock the gate, you could have a real bad mess
dumping on top of your tarp
forgetting to put the body down just please be careful on the road is full of dangers and dangerous individua
Pay special attention to have your brakes adjusted. there is no such a thing as stopping a loaded dump truck

My guess would be maybe an 8spd, but I don't know. Like other have said, there is more to running a dump than an 18 wheeler. It isn't rocket science. If the lift axle arent steerable, you need to lift them in turns. Don't dump on unlevel ground. If it's and air ride suspension it takes some getting use to in corners, and you need to dump air when dumping. When dumping don't forget to unlock the gate because it can cause a roll over. One big thing is a lot of dump truck companies aren't the best on maintenace so that would be my biggest concern.

Thanks guys, I told her I had been a trucker and not a dump trucker driver and they would rather show me than some class B guy who has been rocker a big box truck. I just wanted to learn what I could. Do they double clutch or is it like a normal clutch?

she's talk about a 4 speed transmission. that's basically either a 13 speed or 18 speed. most likely 18 in dump trucks.

bottom 4, then top 4. with your splitter to split the gears. it's no different then shifting a 10 speed.

every truck i've been in has been 18 speeds. but i've never split the gears unless i'm on a hill.

you have granny gear also. which is usually geared so low that you'll never start off in granny gear. unless your parked on a hill. then you use granny. if you don't you stand a good chance at popping the drive axle shaft.

don't kjnow about your state. but in utah. with a 5 axle truck and a 5 axle trailer. you'll be pulling upwards of 120k. some states on the east apparently don't allow trailers.

with a 5 axle truck. you can haul 17 - 18 tons of material. 2 axles will be drop axles. same with a 5 axle trailer. 18 tons. but all axles are on the ground.
this is only based in utah. so i can't tell you about your state. but thats 35 tons you haul between truck and trailer.

when dumping. you park the truck. push the clutch in. engage your PTO. then raise your bed. MAKE SURE YOUR ON LEVEL GROUND. or you'll tip over.
AND LOOK before raising the bed. make sure there's no power lines above you.

bad thing about dump trucks. is the work isn't there like it used to be. when we had the housing boom. so save your money. you might be collecting unemployment in the winter time.
