How many miles do you get per week, how often do you get home, where do you mostly run?

I work TCD. Our mileage can vary quite a bit, but it usually stays decent. Most of the time, a lousy mileage week can be attributed to horrible waiting times at a shipper or receiver (TYSON), but even then we get detention pay. Most of the time I manage to get 2100 - 2600 miles per week, but there are some times it dips to around 1800. TCD requires a minimum of two weeks out with two days home time. Since I'm single without a wife and kids, I typically stay out for 3 - 4 weeks and get 3 - 4 days home time. You get one day off per week you're out.

Although we sometimes get some odd runs, our main running areas are Arkansas, Tennessee, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and sometimes Oklahoma, Ohio and Wisconsin. We also go to the northeast sometimes, however I notice that they don't like to keep drivers up there for a really long time, if I get a run going up there I'm usually back in the south in less than 5-7 days. In the northeast, we primarily run in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, and New Jersey. (These are all pickup and delivery locations, obviously we have to cross other states to get to some of these places).

But again, sometimes we get some odd stuff... I had one of our usual beer runs from Milwaukee to Ypsilanti, MI, and now I'm sitting in Siloam Springs, AR waiting for delivery tomorrow morning with 43,000 lbs of semi truck brake drums. My trainer has already had runs to El Paso, TX, Midland, TX, and out to California, but I haven't talked to ANYONE else who has gone that far west. Typically we don't go further west than the DFW metroplex (which is where I live).

And FYI.. the best run for TCD money-wise is Tulsa, OK to Edmonton, AB in Canada. You drop there and pick up a load of peat moss up there and bring it back into Denver, CO. 3,200 miles round trip in 6 days. You'll usually need a restart on the 7th day lol. I love that run :)

If you have any more TCD questions, feel free to ask!

I run mostly the east coast, PA, Allentown and Manchester. Live outside of DFW so I get a load from TX to PA. I have been averaging round 2600-2800 a week. The last 3 wks were 554 took 5 days off. The next wk was 3065, 2954 and 2600. I've been happy with the miles. Getting my passcard next month so I can start running across the border.

I am considering TCD or flatbed, would you all recommend it over flatbed?

Its all a personal choice. I went TCD cause everyone needs to eat and also I can haul dry products too. I stay out 3-4 wks at a time. Either way you will be happy working for Maverick

Sewerman is right. TCD is a great job and a great career, but flatbedding is a passion and a lifestyle. If you're not really passionate about it, I'd go with TCD.

I think that flatbed would be rewarding. I have just never done it so that naturally makes worry if I can do it or not. However, I believe I can do it. I have always been up for challenges in life and have conquered most of them. I have always wanted to drive and the flatbed intrigues me to carry various loads & such. I know it is hard but I think I can plus it can be very rewarding. Being a female most companies aren't even willing to give you a chance to apply for flatbed, little alone a chance to prove yourself.
