I have never been a trucker and I will not claim to know anything about it. I got into a partnership with a good friend who needs help. He asked me to find 2 guys to drive our other 2 trucks that are currently sitting and not making $$. I have no issue interviewing people and asking questions. But are there some questions that might give us a clue that teh guy is lazy on the road or might quit in a month or so?
Any help on what not to look for?
I need to hire 2 drivers - what interview questions to ask?

Ghost Ryder and kerosene jockey Thank this. -
You also need to discover what your people can offer a prospective driver before you decide on what to ask of the applicants. Can you assure them your boss is not going to screw them over and short-pay them, or in general screw them over repeatedly? A prospective driver for an unknown such as yourself will (should) have more questions of you probably then you will have of them.
critters and superpet39 Thank this. -
You don't know anything about trucking, does your partner?
-
Start by telling a prospective driver everything you can about the job, what is, and isn't expected of the driver, (eg. if he/she blows an air line, are they expected to fix it on the side of the road, call a mobile mechanic or call the office) equipment, compensation, how compensation is calculated and exactly what the job is. Don't sugar coat anything, just tell it like it is. Then, ask the prospective driver for any questions they might have. You will learn ALLOT more about a persons TRUE attitude and work ethic by the questions they ask YOU than you will by the answers they will give to your questions (which may or may not be true).

He knows nothing about trucking. My guess is these are some investors who know nothing about trucking, have ratty equipment, unrealistic expectations of the profits they will make, and will be paying the stupid drivers they hire on a 1099, if they get paid at all.

critters Thanks this. -
Call up the guys past jobs and figure out why he or she left that company and how long they were there for. You won't have a problem keeping them there if everything you guarantee is given to them. And make sure your equipment is good to. We're are you guys located anyways?
