I heard one situation where per diem is probably a good idea to have. A driver that has to pay child support opted into it because it cuts your gross pay by 35% approximately and by doing that makes it appear that he makes less than he really does to the courts.

For the most part, opting out is the way to go. But then again, there are certain situations where it may fit certain people's strategy

Mexican drivers are good and safe drivers. Why doesn't Schneider cross the Mexican border? My load is going to Nissan Mexico, but I'm relaying in Laredo.

I dont fault any man wanting to work hard and earn a living. If they can do it here and show up a lazy american who whines like a little kid then good for them.

    Good talking to ya. later.

The reason US Schneider drivers don't go south of the border is simple - it doesn't make sense from a financial, legal, of safety perspective.

The financial reasons are self-evident: the cost of living/wages are less in Mexico. Why pay a US driver the border crossing fee and .30-.40 cpm when they can pay a Mexican significantly less?

From a legal perspective: what are Mexican HOS? How do Mexican truck inspections work? What is the level of corruption in local cops (ie how likely is it a US truck driver will be subject to a roadside and have to "pay a fine" in cash before being able to leave? Currently there are very few US drivers going up into Canada for the same basic reasons. Canada has different HOS rules which make it easier for the Cannuks to come south, relay their load and head back north with another relay.

Mexico is by and large a safe place. I've got several friends who have traveled extensively in Mexico and they've never had a serious problem. A truck is a higher value target though, so the risk goes up. The border area is also more dangerous than the rest of Mexico.

How good is your Spanish? Good enough to read and comprehend road signs at 60MPH? Good enough to understand and follow directions from Mexican authorities? How about communicating with the shipper/receiver? If you can't communicate you potentially put yourself in a very dangerous position.

Those are just a few of the reason's SNI doesn't send US drivers into Mexico.

I think Schneider should provide free Rosetta Stone CDs on Spanish to all company employees.
