I have noticed a few trucks recently pulling either flats or steps, loaded too, that did not have a headache rack. Also had a customer ask the other day if they where required. He was under the impression that the requirement to secure load properly against any chance of forward movement negated the requirement to have a cabguard. Thank you for any info.

That cab guard isn't going to do anything for you if one of those steel coils decides to go forward

Federal D.O.T no longer requires headache racks, on the tractor, or headboards on the trailers. Carriers may still require them.

Thank you autocar. I knew they arent really much use other than to hang chains on dschmidt201, but the DOT still required them for many years.

Actaully I was still under the impression DOT did. See, learn something new everyday. If you didn't, you would be dead!!

After you slam on the brakes, the momentum the load gained would just smash through the rack anyway. Always build a bulkhead out of the dunnage and chain it up against the load. even if that means every piece needs to be forward to be in line with each other.

I'm really paranoid about heavy stuff sliding forward :confused2:

Ive been to a shipper that required one. Dont remember where though. I like having a nice enclosed one for tarps chains straps etc.

I didn't have one for about a year, we kept missing out on a lot of good paying loads because the customer required them. I finally got my boss convinced to put one on.:biggrin_25522:

my first company didn't have em at all. and all there trailers had boxes for chains and tarps and what not.

this second company has them for chains. the trailers have boxes but they're all banged up. so they don't get used. and we swap trailers every trip back.
