My sister use to work for a guy that had a tower business. I've done some side jobs on the buildings before. All he done was worked on tower acquisitions buying them up around the country as he could. He would rent out tower space to the cell phone companies similar to an apartment building. You get a spot on the tower for your antenna and building space for your equipment. He started out in his parents basement just when cell phones were coming to life. Five years later he sold 51% of the business for $46 million.

Companies like Straight Talk buy the data usage from Verizon, Sprint, and ATT. I know Straight Talk is Walmart exclusive. I wonder if they are behind ST? The plans are cheap but you never want to have to go through customer service which sucks. I've had two problems with mine. One time took 2 weeks to fix and the second took 5 days to fix.

my phone has root. it won't do updates. i can manually download but they don't install.

as for windows. automatic updates is the first thing that gets turned off BEFORE windows establish an internet connection. i never use updates. they make your computer boot up slower and slower. i'll wait till service packs.

as for other apps. they are all turned off. but my laptop is pretty basic. nothing on it except for what i need on the road. adobe, flash, printer, ringcentral for faxing. and my logs. all the bloatware is uninstalled. just my basic trucking laptop.

VZ when they do an firmware software update, the data used does not get charged against your data plan. I am sure the other companies do the same.

If the Apps update then yes they would use the Data Plan.

actually, i'm pretty sure it does use your data. becuase it warns you and prefers you use wifi instead.

Our data charges do not apply to over-the-air software updates on basic phones. They do require a data connection to complete the software update, but the data utilized is not billable

I paid full price for our phones to retain the unlimited. I can go to sprint as well, but lets face it Verizon has better coverage.
