After reading the "New Driver Training Found To Be Lacking" article on the front page of this website, I'm thinking more about making the sacrifice to go to a place like Fox Valley.
I know you never stop learning and schools are limited in how much they can teach, but if I'm going to do this, I'm doing it right and getting the best training possible. Living somewhat close to what is considered one of the best in the country, it would seem foolish to not at least try to make that happen.
Roehl and Millis both seem to be among the better training companies, but I'm not so sure they offer what I'm looking for as far as freight hauling is concerned. Leaning towards ltl or possibly tanker at the moment. That changes every other day or so, so stay tuned.

I don't know about Fox Valley, but the one in Sun Prairie (Diesel Truck Driver Training School) is one to avoid. You get the bare bones basics only. I speak from experience, mine in 1999 and my hubby's in 2007. They were doing less in 2007 than they did in 1999.
desperado75 and toymaker Thank this. -
Fox Valley Technical College is top notch. PM me for more info.

Diesel Driving School in Sun Prairie is a CDL mill. I did check them out a few years ago and the equipment was old junk. I know a couple of people that went there and they said it wasn't very good training for the price you pay for it, which is higher than a tech college.
Fox Valley is highly rated and not that far from you but here's my question to you now. Please elaborate on what is wrong with Waukesha Tech? They're right in your neighborhood. What is the problem there?? It's actually the first Technical college program that I've known to get bad reports on?? I would really like to know as I'm considering all 3 tech. colleges in WI that offer training. I'd think they would follow more stringent training practices with it being a technical college than the private for profit schools. The costs for any of the 3 below is around $2500.00 plus living expenses.

Have you checked out Schneider, they are working with Fox Valley and are looking for drivers on the east side of the state for tanker jobs too. You'd be right in their hiring area. -
For one of the best CDL schools in the midwest, please check out these people:

Very small classes and not far away from any point in SE Wisconsin.
There are people on this board that have attended this school and were very pleased with the training and job
placement they were given.
I know the owners personally and visit them periodically. They use real OTR trucks (vs a simple day cab) so you
actually learn in a rig that will likely be very similar to what you end up driving.
When I attended a school back in 1990, I had only a day cab to train in and learn from and it makes a big difference if you can train on regular OTR equipment.toymaker and Zen Trucker Thank this. -
Accidentally hit back button and now there's a double post. Didn't see a delete option.?? Odd.

Goldenfan,
I've scratched Sun Prairie. Too pricey with too many complaints.
I don't know that there's anything horribly wrong with Waukesha. I found very few reviews online about them, and they didn't sound great just based on that.
Fox Valley has quite the reputation as it trains on all kinds of loaded trailers, has a skid pad of some sort, etc.
I drove by the Waukesha campus a couple of weeks ago, and was impressed with their equipment there that day: a late-model Peterbilt and a couple of Volvo's all with sleeper cabs. I haven't completely ruled it out.
Hanadarko,
Thanks for the advice on Spirit CDL. I'll be looking into it. Looks promising so far.Hanadarko Thanks this. -
I went to Spirit and was very happy with it and the company I went with was impressed by what I had learned.
Since it was a little far from Madison to commute, I just found a room to rent for the 5 weeks in Rockford on Craigslist. -

Thanks for replying on Waukesha tech. Were the complaints about it from lack of training or was it I can't get a job locally so the school is bad? That seems to be what's going on with some of the posts in the driving schools section here. The course looks to line right up with Chippewa Valley and Fox Valley. I've only looked at it online through the schools website and it looks OK there.
I'll look for the reviews on it as well.
