You might want to recheck that figure. Tommy Tourist is driving down the big road at 65 mph when he realizes he just missed his exit, so he slams on his brakes. Let's do the math

.3-.5 seconds for you to realize what is going on
.3-.5 seconds for you to react
.5 for the air to actually start applying the brakes.

At 65mph, you travel 95 ft/sec...So in that 1.5 Seconds, you travel 143 feet. You now have 143 feet to stop your 80,000lb machine from ruining Tommy Tourists life. I figure you'll slow through 40mph when you slam into the back of him.

How dare that Tommy Tourist slam on his breaks and put the traffic behind him in danger!! He should have continued on to the next exit and made the exit safely. Someone needs to reconsider renewing his license when it comes up.

I agree, but what ends up happening is that Tommy Tourist (or his family) ends up hiring Sleazy Sam and Ambulance chaser Alan attorneys at law to ruin your life and take everything you and your (former) company own...because you are the big bad truck driver that is supposed to be a professional. Even worse...if you kill him, your most likely going to jail for manslaughter.

Sam the Semi Driver should have invested in a dashcam to prove that Tommy Tourist was at fault and killed his own family.

it doesn't matter if you're driving a truck, or operating the floor washer at walmart. in everything we do now a days we need to be prepared to defend ourselves, (especially if you're a working citizen). people can sue for anything and for some odd reason the courts allow them to win which blows me away.

while i'm driving i'm always looking for an out, and if there's no out i'm always looking for a way to make sure there's no way the accident could be my fault if one ever occurred. and if i do end up in a court room, i will make sure that it will not be an easy win for them. and if i win i'ma turn around and bury them, i don't care if the family dog was crippled in the accident and the child was ejected out of the back glass of the min van. if you knew you were wrong and at fault, but for some odd reason tried to destroy my life because you wanted some money, then i'll take no pity.

Because we are all careless and don't give a dang about our CDLs. BTW, good job in calling the OP a supertrucker while trying to defend them.

Holier than thou? Are you kidding me?

The OP made a error, and got a careless driving ticket. Now he's upset his employer is giving him flak about it. Guess what? You aren't getting any sympathy from me. Learn from your mistakes, and live with them.

Could you please provide the reference to that 9 to 12 seconds ? That's about twice the interval I have always heard .
With any traffic on the highway at all even 6 seconds is impossible to maintain .
    O.K. , that's what FMCSA says .

That could be confusing . It's better explained here .

I don't know where you guys drive....Montana maybe. Around here It's not possible to leave a gap like you're talking about. It gets filled immediately. The only way to even come close to doing what you're talking about is to be that thing that floats down the stream (or whatever that driving concept is). And I know what you all think of that.

I think you holier than thou types are full of it.

I believe your right rank who really cares about stats of how close, far or anything in between the point is we ALL tailgate in some sort of aspect even if you get cut off in heavy traffic and don't conscientiously slow immediately you are in fact tailgating which is a ticketing offense. In reality you can be pulled over for anything the cop has a mind to write you up for it doesn't have to be a grandiose offense just a officer with a bad day and there you go it just so happens to be your day ...lucky you..
I believe your right rank those that say they dont tailgate dont realize even in heavy traffic if you get cut off and dont pur
