The new changes will affect some drivers. It makes it more difficult to do a reset than the current rules. You can thank the unions, some special interest groups and uninformed people who are put in place at the FMCSA. Unions want this in hopes of driver wages dropping so that they might increase their membership. Others want it because they think that it will make roads safer. I don't see either happening. Until drivers decide to take more control over the situation, it will only get worse. There are those who only want drivers to work a 40 hour work week and only 8 hours per day. If you don't like what is going on, get on your computer, write an email, write a snail mail letter or call those in congress or who make the rules and let them know how you feel. If you are not a member of OOIDA, then join. They are the only group that is really working to stop some of the idiotic legislation that plagues this industry. It doesn't do any good to complain on a trucking forum. It will have an impact if you contact those who are in charge of making the rules. There is a new head of the FMCSA. It is a good time to make contact and let him know how these rules affect your livelihood and life. If enough drivers take the time to write and call, it can make a difference. The main reason we have had so many changes to the hos is due to special interest groups making their views known while those effected remain silent. The powers that be only hear one side of the issue.

The 30 minute rule will have no effect on my work day, I'll just wait a little longer after I start to take a duece. That has always been a 30 minute stop for me. And I've always used it as off duty time anyway. -
there are 1000's of drivers that complain they only get 34 hours off
but the company sats they had 2 days
now they should be happy
mostly none of us like change
we will all learn to manipulate the situation to our advantage
unless we are incapable of being smarter then the goverment

No matter how many regulations there are, the ones that run illegal are going to continue to run illegal! It's the ones that run legal all or most of the time are the ones that have to readjust their schedules and possibly even a reduction in pay. The new 34 hour restart doesn't really effect me at all. I pull oversize/heavy haul 100% of the time. The only difference now will be, the weeks that I use to have 2 or more restarts will be reduced to 1. I normally take a 30 min break or more during the day so nothing really has changed there either.
I've stayed out on the road for 3 weeks or more before and never did a restart or ran out of hours. Sure, there were some days that I could only work 6 or 7 hours but I never got to a point that I could not work at all. I agree with the other posters....if one day we could all stick together and voice our opinions, shut down the industry for a few days or something to have the drivers take control of the situation we would be able to have a better industry. Until then, we have to put up with the BS rules and take it like good little drivers and do as your told.... -
Just had this very discussion with some of my drivers about the 30 min. break and the limit of one 34 hr. reset. As I explained to them, I really don't see where the 30 min. break amounts to anything, if you HAVE to drive the first 8 hours or more without a break of some kind, something is wrong.
That part went over well, however the one reset per week may be an issue for some, NOT because you can't get around it with rolling your hours, but because SOME drivers can't seem to grasp, OR don't want to have to think about going back to recapping hours.
To be honest, in our work the 34 hr. reset spoiled us, we are very flexible on when we can load/unload, so most guys got into the habit of just putting in their 70 and where ever the reset fell (usually here at the terminal, if they live here) they would be off for two full days min.
But I can see where it is going to get confusing for drivers that are planning a normal 70/34 and then let's say half way into their week they breakdown for a day. Normally I would just tell them to stay put until they have a 34 in and reset.
Now they will have to go back to the beginning of their week and recap/roll their hours until they get home or sit somewhere for 2 days off. The two overnight periods doesn't affect us at all, as we always took two nights no matter where the reset was at.
I can see our safety dept, being busy checking logs the first time someone can't run a full 70 before they get home. I still don't think everyone understands it completely. To be honest, I really didn't see the need to change it, I for the life of me can't figure out why TWO 34 hr. breaks in a week is a bad thing?mp4694330 Thanks this. -
If enough drivers emailed, faxed, called and wrote to these people, it would make a difference in how and what rules were put in place. Many are already on the internet, anyway. It won't take that much effort to send an email or make a phone call.
