Go with Superior. TMC has nice trucks but that is about it. They are slower than Superiors trucks as well. Pay will be better for less work like Rob said. And you won't be trying to tarp a load out in the cold or hot. I know my opinion is biased somewhat but most the drivers I know personally have been here anywhere from 4-8 years if that tells you anything. It is a good company and you are in a good area for getting on with Superior. They will keep you as busy as you want to be but are real good about getting you home if you need to be.

FYI, our pay is .46cpm loaded and .38cpm empty. $20 load/unload pay for the first 2 hours then $14.65 per hour after two hours. Breakdown pay, layover pay. $10 per night sleeper berth pay. Pre-pass and I-pass.

Rob can add more if I missed anything.

Nice thread! I am a fuel hauler, and I can't imagine unloading product with a 2 inch hose, brutal!

Not really because we only average from one to two stops per day depending on how far we run. I'm a Disttech driver out of Baltimore, md. Takes about 45minutes to unload depending on the product.

It also depends on the condition on the plants piping and how long the run is. 45 minutes is about the fastest I have experienced. Over 8 hours is the longest with a thick fire retardant and a 4 story tall pipe to reach the tank. Fortunately we get paid by the hour for those. It can actually work to your advantage money wise especially if you can legally log sleeper or off duty. Getting paid for hours that are not part of your 70 helps the check tremendously.

    RJ33RD Thanks this.

We have one customer I've gone to quite a few times where you unload water thin product through a 3 inch hose into a 3 inch line that goes up a couple floors. Should take at most 45 mins to unload, but the problem is there are 2 valves, one where you connect and one near the tank. So of course they never remember to open the one near the tank. And because it's a paper mill, as soon as the guy signs the paperwork, he disappears. Always ends up taking me >2 hrs by the time I get someone to call him on the radio and he makes his way over to open the valve. The worst part is I ALWAYS ask if the valve near the tank is open before I open my valves, and they say yes.

Thanks, I think? Unloading through a 2" hose is not as bad as it sounds. With 25-30 psi of air pushing it off, the product comes off pretty quick. Plus, like Rob said, if it takes too long we start getting demurrage pay so it's all good with me.

Those 2" hoses are a lot lighter and easier to handle than the 3" so I don't mind the 2" hoses at all.

I've been a contractor with Superior for six months (was with Miller Transporters for five years prior) Glad I made the move. Had to sell the truck for personal reasons and start driving as a company driver. I'm out of Charlotte, NC and I cannot say enough how good my dispatch team is. I've been trucking 20 years, pulling tankers for 5 years, but, I should have came to superior a lot sooner.

So tell me more about being a contractor. I have talked to a few and they seem to make pretty good money. I may consider it in another year. My only hang up is I have a fear of commitment. I know if I bought a truck I would be married to the thing pretty much. Nice being a company driver and not having to worry about much.

There's benefits and drawbacks in both. You have to consider whether you want affordable health insurance or not at all. What kind of truck can you get. No you're not married to it but if it gives you trouble it's all yours.
