hi,
my first post here . im a wannabe trucker from El Paso , Tx . .. at the moment just got promoted at my current job , work customer service, 8 months ago was paid $8.25/hr got promoted fast and now getting $12.50/hr.its a good comfortable job .......but..... i always wanted to be a truck driver .. not as a job but as a lifestyle. I want to get my CDL . i applied for financial aid and will be doing driving school thru student loans.
will be a big leap of faith to leave current cushy job and go into trucking .have family with 4 kids . my wife supports me . im thinking of working in Odessa/Midland oilfields (4 hrs drive from here) so i can come home at least once a week.i am ready to work frac team /water hauling ..
i dont even know if i will get a job fresh out of cdl school.i see a lot of ads in craigslist need atleast 1 yr experience.
just want to check with the truckers already working in tx oilfields .. what chance do i have of getting a job fresh out of school in the oilfields?
---my concern is im a green card holder not a citizen .look different . i can be mistaken for a hispanic person ... (im from india)...

You can not get a good job with nice equipment or benefits or pay without 2 yrs exp and tank haz mat and twic.
d o g Thanks this. -
yes i will do tank hazmat and twic....just need to get a foot in the door..wanna know if anybody takes without experience. .. have applied at key energy and halliburton... i expect to get a lower pay because of no experience.
d o g Thanks this. -
from what i have read on here, Once you get your CDL, (assuming you get all your endorsements and a twic), that it wont be hard for you to get a job hauling water- Wont be the best paying job, but with 2 years exp... you can write you're own ticket...... Again this is from what i have read on here, as well as job listings i have seen on Craigslist.
Good luck on getting your CDLd o g Thanks this. -
Get all endorsements at the same time you get your cdl. Tanker/Hazmat, doubles & triples. You might not think you will need them but it always looks good to an employer that you can pull any trailer he's got. Besides tanker and doubles and triples are easy tests. Once you have them you have them for life. Hazmat is the only one you have to renew.
superpet39 and d o g Thank this. -
Also get a twic the employers like you to have that
d o g Thanks this. -
If you're dead set on oilfield, you'll have to get at least one year experience with most if not all companies before they'll let you haul a tanker full of oil or drilling acid. You can drive a water or sand truck to get your experience, both of which pay very well, around $18 dollars an hour. That's how much Chesapeake pays anyway, but I'm not sure if they have any operations in your area. If you're just wanting to drive a tanker, Schneider is the only company I know of that will give a tanker job to a fresh graduate. Hope this helps.

RockinChair Thanks this.

thank you .. yes i will apply for schnieder. i am working on getting my CDL asap. i see they need twic .

Key will hire you but be careful because many of their yards are in a slow spell. Frac companies will definitely hire you. I wouldn't worry about twic unless you plan to haul crude. Some companies will assist you in getting twic once you're hired. Get your tanker endorsement and maybe hazmat then start applying.
Hatley Thanks this.
