Rates will vary from one agent to another. Some have cheap freight and others have good paying loads. Some only book loads through other brokers or 3pls and but the good ones have their own freight. It is up to you to find the agents with the best paying freight. As to how much you can clear, that depends entirely on your expenses, revenue and how well you run your business. It will be different for everyone. You could go broke or make a lot of money. I think that Landstar still takes 27% of the linehaul rate. The BCO receives 73% of the rate. Some specialized trailers pay a higher percentage to the BCO. There are a few other fees that Landstar charges. You can find out about that by contacting recruiting or see if they will send you a copy of their contract. All deductions are listed. If you pull flats with Landstar, you will need to have your own trailer or rent one from them. You will also need your own securement equipment and tarps.

Good Question??? do you have your own trialer (what type), what routes are you going to run? Can you do Oversized?
Off the average after expeses there is no reason you cant put a decent pay check in the bank, its on you how hard you run and where you want to run

you need to do the expenses sheet and figure what your base expenses are then you will need to know what you need for base milage rate.
Stay away from the dead areas.

:biggrin_25526:I was interested in flat. Do I need the entire flatbed checklist to get started or is certain equipment used a lil more than others?

Well your in a good area to get out from, If you stay in the east of 35 area you can do real good, yall need to do what feels right for you. The load board is full of loads in that are right now, did a quick search from your area and there are over 70 loads paying above 3.30 per mile most of which are going to good areas.

Dont recall seeing a platform check list, but if its on there you probley need it. If youve haul a flat or step for a while you know what you need. Just checked our site didnt see any list maybe its a hiring thing OZR would be best to tell you.
    But you can figure
    12 chains and binders
    12 4" straps atleast 6 2" straps
coil racks, atleast 6' drops, smoke tarp, coil bag, bungees
    dunage
just the basics till you figure what your going to haul
