At what point do you decide that your GPS is lost, or really &^$% with you?

    Could these be tips??

I used my GPS for getting to remote places to install 2 way Satellite. My GPS took me down this 2 tract and I came to a river with NO bridge.....Tried to turn around and got stuck and you know the rest of the story. GPS is nice but not perfect.

Actually, my GPS was spot on. This is the route to the customers address. Not the only route, but the actual road they are on.

Now with that said, had the customer been HONEST. I would have come in to the front gate. Which is located on a paved road, in another city (based on HHMG) and has a sign posted to continue down the road for another mile, turn, go another mile into the back gate.

This business covers OVER a square mile. The front gate would have paid me 18 additional miles due to it's location, had they clearly stated their actual physical address. The front in one city, the back in another. Actually, it is in neither...it's the way the zones worked out in the county.

The first question out of the customers mouth when I called to see what gate I needed to be at. "Did you use a GPS?" Which let me know right off the bat, they were trying to cheat drivers out of mileage.

Food for thought: I know this area very well. I know this road very well. Although I had not been down this road in some time, I knew it to be passable by truck (except in wet conditions). It took me directly to the back gate, were I was to unload. And came to the exact mileage I was paid.

  5. GPS certainly isn't the real deal for the better, as I learnt awhile back.
A Horse Trans/Van called, said they were lost, they followed the GPS's map.
Is the GPS only as smart as the human behind the typing keys for info to follow? Kinda scary.
The whole route they had this Van going , lacked HUGE common sense.
It jeopordized the precious cargo behind the wheel as well as the horses in the van.
At what point do you take matters into your own hands driving and is it wise to call first (Dispatch) or whomever , and then add to your LOG (is that done) about the troubled route by the GPS?

That is why I like the Streets and Trips 2007 with Truckers patch. I can see more of the map and make intelligent decisions from that point. Just have a good GPS receiver for it.

  7. Wiseguywireless,

Where can I get one of those?

We are looking for a portable GPS that has truck routes. Any recommendations?

No portable GPS has the truck routes in it.

GPS is just a tool. Not a replacement to the truckers atlas. The atlas shows the low bridges.

You should always contact the shipper or receiver for any local restrictions.
