    Hello everyone!

I live in Oregon and have been researching becoming a trucker and getting my Class A CDL for a few weeks now. I would like to join a company that is going to pay for training since I do not have a lot of money. The two companies I am mainly looking into are Stevens Transport and PRIME. I don't need much time home and really want to be dedicated to the job, earning a good income. I have a few questions I hope someone can answer.

    1) I am 6' and weight 135 pounds. I have read that many companies won't hire you if you are too overweight, are there any restrictions on possibly not weighing enough?

    2) Should I get my CDL permit before I attend the trucking school? A Stevens Transport recruiter told me it's a waste of money and will have to get another in Colorado where I am attending the schooling.

    3) Also, I have read that Texas will not allow out of state citizens to get there CDL and if I attend Stevens Transport that is where I would be getting my license at. How do you obtain a CDL license when you don't live in that states school?

    4) In your opinion what company is a better choice: Stevens Transport or PRIME? And why?

i would go to prime for a good income nd their training is tough which means they will make sure you know what you doing when you go solo instead of going to stevens because stevens is cheap like werner 0.26 cpm nd everything else is a joke at stevens, not to offense stevens drivers it's just my opinion lol. Prime is very slow but i wouldn't worry about it as long as you are getting pay for moving like a turtle. Don't waste your money get your permit from whoever you decide to go with.

    That won't be a problem.

If you go with Prime, we recommend that you do get your permit before coming to Springfield MO... it takes a lot of the pressure off of the first week in orientation.

Going with Prime, you'll receive a CDL from the state of Missouri. It's a simple process to transfer it back to your state, but be sure to ask your motor vehicles department about the particulars. Illinois and Massachusetts are kind of weird about how they do it. In Colorado, all you have to do is prove your residence. Typically you have 30 or 60 days to get this done, and we route you and your trainer to your home state to get that done.

I've never driven for Stevens, so I can't really comment on them. Prime treats us very well, you're training is free if you stay one year after going solo, and you'd be starting for 41-cpm solo in the reefer division if you're in one of the lightweight tractors. Most of your questions can probably be answered by reading this thread...

I have read over that thread and have two more questions I don't believe I saw answered on there.

    1) After starting at 41-cpm are there pay raises?

    2) If the training is free after staying for 1 year do I get the money back I had already been paying or is it that I just sign a 1 year contract and don't make payments?

Yes. This may be dated since it's been some time since I was on the company side, but at that time it was regular 0.5-cpm raises every 125,000 dispatched miles. Empty and loaded miles count. That works out to about every year.

You don't pay anything except for the fees for a permit (if you choose to get one in Missouri,) and you're initial DOT physical. Things like TWIC card and passport costs are worked out in reasonable weekly payments once you're employed after receiving your CDL.

No matter how much I eat I do not gain weight... I have been this weight for almost 10 years... Just waiting for my metabolism to slow down. I've been told it runs in the family and it should slow down within 3 years.

I see over 120 views yet barley anyone has selected either Stevens transport or Prime in the poll.

Does anyone else have a different opinion?
