Can you get your tanker/hazmat/twic with a cdl permit, or must u have a CDL 1st?

I say get them together because in California it's a flat fee. If I remember its $62 to take all the tests but if you take all but hazmat and then come back a week later to take hazmat you'll be paying another $62 just to add an endorsement. Not sure how it is in other states. I don't know what that dude was talking about saying not to do it because of a letter being good for 30 days. Out here TSA will notify the DMV when you are cleared for hazmat. That is good for 5 years.

 

Actually testing (at least for me) on my endorsements cost the same regardless of if I was taking 1 endorsement or all.

You can go get your Haz and twic now. You do not need a class A for Haz. There are people who need a Haz for class C. If you do have your Haz your twic is around $20 cheaper to get. Make sure when you're applying for your twic that you tell them you already have your haz(if that's the case)

Theres no problem getting it all before your class a license. Your license will be good for 4-5 years and your twic is good for 5 years.

Its better to have more than you need then not enough. You never know what job you could get and what you might miss out on by not having a Haz or a twic or both. Most places are not going to wait on you to obtain endorsements. They want to fill a seat and get work started

My CDL A/TWIC/Tanker/Hazmat does not expire until 2018.

Depends on the state really, when I first got mine in MA, they recommend not getting the endorsements until after road test, otherwise the trooper giving the test can, and often would incorporate them into the road test. Also in MA it's not every year, but every license renewal, you pay for each endorsement you have. So it was like $30 for each one, on top of license renewal fee.

 

That hold ground may hold true for Commiefornia, but not everywhere else.

 

I'll buy that a fee is required when license renewal is due but I don't buy that there is a yearly fee for endorsements. If that were the case California would be the first to jump on board with that charge.

 

As I said you don't need the a CDL to apply for the TSA background check or to have your fingerprints done but you do need to have the letter in hand before they can issue you the endorsement on your CDL and the letter has to be less than 30 days old.

If you apply and then hop in a truck with a trainer the letter will be invalid by the time you arrive home to read it. If you wait to long before you start working for someone after you finish school you may have trouble finding a job. Most companies want you within 30 days of finishing school.

I would recommend doing the TSA stuff about two (2) weeks before your road test and you should have the letter around the same time as your road test. Some states let you test for Haz-Mat without the letter my state doesn't, so ask DMV in your hometown. No state will issue a CDL w/ Haz-Mat on it without the letter.

With a Haz-Mat endorsement you will be required every two (2) years to redo the TSA stuff and most states make you retest for the Haz-Mat endorsement.

My home state requires a 3 year renewal for hazmat. A hazmat endorsed CDL in my state is only valid for 3 years. And yes, a yearly fee will be required. It would be required by the TSA and not by the state though. You have to update your criminal records every year via a backround check, and that costs money.
