Do you think that OOIDA is a better place to handle getting your Authority and DOT no. or is someone else better?
And do you think OOIDA is good for finding the cheapest mandatory insurance or is someone else better??
Are you glad you joined OOIDA??

besides being cheaper, you really need to understand everything with your authority. There's no better way to learn it than to do it. USDOT, MC, 2290, UCR, IRP, home state authority, IFTA, NYHUT, KYU, New Mexico weight and distance, possibly Oregon weight and distance, possibly SCAC. make a checklist, look it up. there is a great thread at the top of this form "the steps, forms, and info" or something like that will get you going. need to learn this stuff, do it, and mark your calendar so you remember when to renew. yup, you have to do it again and again and again, lol.

The process agents usually cost about 75.00, if you are a member of OOIDA, they will do it for free. And the membership is only 35.00, 25.00 if you do it at the ooida truck or tell them you need a discount, etc. To me, I send them 35.00, well worth the investment. The cost of filing for authority is only 300, and as soon as you do, it gets published in the Federal Register and your phone will be ringing off the hook with people wanting to do your insurance, prorate, IFTA, etc. The insurance for liability and cargo must be on file for 2 weeks before they will grant the authority.

I bought my truck and trailer at the same time before I got my authority. Unless you plan on doing power only for a company such as JB Hunt or PTL, you will need to either rent or purchase your own trailer. If you don't have a trailer you will miss out on a lot of revenue. I don't know anyone who has gotten their authority without buying a trailer. If you only want to do power only you may be better off leasing to another carrier rather than getting your authority.

I joined OOIDA to help me get started as a new venture. Turns out they won't insure you unless you got I think 2 years certifiable OTR experience or something near that. Kinda discouraging, but when it's time for me to do year 2, I'll see if they can beat Progressive.
