I'm interested in getting on with a large company as a new driver. I don't have experience, but I did recently get my CDL through a private training company. My question is, I have some substantial gaps in my recent employment history and I'd like to get some feedback on to what extent that will be an obstacle to hiring. Thanks.

Hopefully, you can acquire a solution to your problem, but my question is, will the private CDL school you acquired your CDL from let you off the hook for the cost of the training should you not be successful in your job hunt?

Just give them a friends number and say you worked for them. Make sure you and your friend get on the same page first. Every company I worked for never even called previous employers.

I had a number of gaps, and only one company had me sign a form letter and get it certified but I'm told gaps are alright as long as you don't lie.

If you have a break in employment more than 30 days you simply put the dates and write unemployed that's it. The law says you have to account for the time not that you had to be employed. It's not a problem.

None of the following are laws, they are more like standards in the industry.

If you wait more than 30 days to become employed from the time you finish school that does tend to become a problem.

Once you start driving and if you stop working a driving job for more than 90 days, that becomes a problem.

If you work a local driving job for more than a year, then that becomes a problem should you want to return to OTR

Not really a good idea, it's ALOT easier just to keep it simple, say you weren't working in a DOT regulated industry for the time of the non employment and get your letters signed. My friend took off two years and had ZERO problems getting hired when he got his cdl. Telling lies and making up fake employers is not smart to do, they'll find out and it's alot easier just to tell the truth and say you weren't working for two years or whatever you can still get a job telling the truth.
