I gave you the answer. Do you even have access to CFR 49?

Then why don't 306 trailers come with multiple placard holders?

The MC306 only deals with the way the tank is constructed and I'm sure placing placards on the sides and front would be a request that the customer would have done. There's so many different type of set ups out there the only way to build the tank with placards would be to use the standard way unless asked to build to spec by the buyer. The standard is listed in the CFR 49 parts 100 to 177 para 172.504 (a).

Thanks, but that was actually a rhetorical question directed at the quoted poster.

It seems the answer is only one placard is required if all compartments have the same product but that really doesn't make sense . How would responders to an accident know which compartments had product in them ?
The OP really should have asked this question to the shipper before initialing bills noting proper placards were given .

Maybe the shipping papers would list the compartments if the product is different. I don't really know because our shipping papers are correct when printed at the rack. I wouldn't know about listing compartments either since we haul just gasoline and diesel. I just thought that would be the place to communicate the load since the shipping papers are very important to first responders. Also if you dig into the placard requirements in the CFR 49 there's a lot of products where you just bump to the higher risk as long as the group and packaging is the same. It takes a while to get it right since the book is a nightmare written by the government but the shipper is responsible to make sure all is correct when they present the load to the driver. The driver must check to CYA and avoid tickets and fines.

    RockinChair Thanks this.

I didn't find anything myself, but I just got done training a couple weeks ago on HazMat. My company (Groendyke Transport / Enid, OK) has been doing this stuff a long time, so I trust what they teach me to be true. I also know they don't like to waste anything, no matter how little the cost, including placards. If they could get away with 1 instead of 3, they would do it, as long as it was safe to do, and covered you legally. This very subject was specifically discussed in our training.

But like I said, at the time, it was new information to me. Never stop learning, especially when they change the rules constantly.

It's all there listed in post #7 in this very same thread. The rules are all in the 49 CFR parts 100 to 177. You may not have access to that book but I guarantee your company does. Take the reference listed in post #7 and ask to see the 49 CFR. Your company should have no problem in showing you the book. I don't know if you can buy it at a truck stop but I bought mine through the college where I was going to school. It was over a 100 bucks but you know they charge a crazy price for required books in college. If you can, I highly recommend that you get a copy of the book if you're hauling hazmat. You already know there's many rules and regulations that can get you as the driver. Please let me know if you find one at the truck stop.
