Tankers the Schneider way

Is that 4 full 24 hour days or do you count the days you arrive home and leave home. Say you deliver close to the house at 5 AM on Friday and arrive home at 8 AM. Would Schneider count that Friday as a day home even though you worked that morning? I don't consider it a home day in my numbers unless I wake up in my bed and go to sleep in my bed. 34 hours is not a weekend off in my book.

 

That is good. We don't actually have a rule for days off. Its more a policy of dispatching you towards your home terminal with a goal of home weekly. Once you get home they ask when you want to go back out. During slow freight times you get more time at home...sometimes more than you want. They will dispatch a driver from another terminal over one at home to avoid layover pay. Anytime we sit over 14 hours away from home we go on the clock. That is $146 per day guaranteed when you are away from home. It protects your income during the slow seasons.

 

If the loads are there its no problem. You can ask the dispatcher not to route you back home. Tanker work has peaks and valleys though. When freight gets scarce they will deadhead you back home rather than let you float around the system where they have to pay layover. During the recession in 2008 that happened a lot. The positive side of that is they don't make you sit in a truck stop unpaid waiting for a load when its slow. You might sit at home unpaid though. 1st and 4th quarter has been my slowest the past 4 years with the exception of this year when 1st quarter was my second best ever.
