As a newbie, I am reading the forums and searching the web for information. I am having a hard time figuring out who is an Intermodal company as well as what the actually job entails. Any assistance would be appreciated. I know that it has probably been asked before but honestly I could not find a thread in New Drivers that explained Intermodal as a whole. Thanks again!

Im pretty sure JB Hunt and Werner have an Intermodal division
-
So does Schneider. Intermodal shipping involves containers that can be transported by truck, train and ship. A container will usually see all three types of transit in one trip.

Also, you aren't going to be able to get a job hauling intermodal until you have some experience under your belt. Intermodal pays more than the typical dry van fleet, but railyards are very secure and hard to get into, and if you cause an accident in one, you might as well find a new career.

Youll probably need a TWIC card aswell I would assume.
-
TWIC is for maritime purposes only.
-
At least I believe it is currently. I know there was some talk about requiring it in other places, railyards included, but I'm not sure if it's required yet or not. I never enter railyards so I don't know.

According to TSA's website, TWIC is still only required at ports. -
I am in Chicago and do intermodal for KLLM. We pull trailers to and from rail yards. Never going more than 4 hours away. Home every night.
My friend does intermodal for JB (I think) and is out sunday night through thursday. Home friday and saturday.
