Ok, I'm new to this page and getting ready to be in the industry. I've read and heard lots of scary things. But as a little girl this is something I've always wanted to do, now that my kids are all grown only 1 left at home I've decided to try it. I know its not a get rich quick type of job. What I need to know is what a good company for a woman is to start with. I don't think I have the upper body strength to start with a flatbed company although TMC has offered. I'm only 5"2. Can any of you suggest where I should start? I'm a hard worker, I don't mind getting dirty, cold, and hot and I don't mind being away from home 2 to 3 weeks at a time. Not that I would love it, but it is what it is. I had to do it with the last job I had and it was fine. I just need to be able to make ends meet financially.
Thanks.

Where do you live. I'd suggest going with a training company that's close to home.
-
Any of the mega carriers with training programs can be a good start for you. Best advice I can give is start with one company, read everything you can about them and talk with drivers from that company. Base your decision on your feels and what drivers can tell you about the company. Put in some time, a year sometimes two and then if you decide that you need to move on, then you will have the experience to back your move. Good luck.

I live right on the NC, Va state line. Roxboro NC. Werner and Swift are right in South Boston Va? Anyone have any insight on them?

Hmmm, I am surprised that no one mentioned US Express. From the advertisements, I'd say that they cater to women. I have to say, I do like your spirit...you're ready to rock. My suggestion: look at Prime or Schneider...they have tankers...since you're ready to get down and dirty.
Why tanker? If I wasn't pulling an open trailer, I would be pulling a tanker. -
Get that little pitite girl attitude out of your head.In trucking men and women are equal. So with that said any starter company is the same depending what division you choose.Companies are not going to cut you any slack because you're a lady of 5'2'.By the way I have seen the tiniest ladies do flatbed.I'm tall and thin but won't do flatbed because that involves work, lol
Nightwind8830 Thanks this. -
I am not touting any particular company over another, BUT.
In your search for a company to get your start, try to pick one that has a history of hiring women. And not just the casual level. There are companies that are set up to deal with females, such as putting women with women trainer's. Not that that is one of YOUR requirement's, but it might make it a little easier on you.
Nothing worse than getting some jerk, that think's you are his private stash, provide to him on a platter. And they are out there.
Do your homework and don't just blindly jump at the first offer.
Trucking can be a satisfying career, if you are willing to put up with the crap it takes to get started.ladyharrison and pattyj Thank this. -
Excellent point,I think Crete has the same sex train due to the harassment issue.
