Typical shut down voltage is 9.6v threshold.

Just everyones knowledge. It's not the oil pressure the lubricates. It's the oil.

15psi will already be enough to get the oil to every place it's needed. Turbo witch most worry about needs about 12psi and has a restrictor to keep the pressure down. Even how much pressure you have on the inlet the oil just comes out without any pressure. It's meant to return back to the pan by it's own weight. That's also why the turbo needs to be mounted over the oil level or it would need a drain pump to remove the oil.

The reason for high pressure like 65psi on 1000 rpm is that when the oil gets really the oil pressure drops and without high pressure at normal temps it wouldn't circulate when it's really hot at low rpms.

An engine driven on a normal highway doesn't need any more idle than the time it takes to get to the stop since presumably you are not having full throttle until the last second and then on the brakes. My guess would be you are lifting up long before you stop, that's enough cooling time.

The lowest idle for a series 60 is 600 RPM. IT is computer controlled, it will control the fuel. Extended periods of time do require fast idle. Sure, you can get away with not doing it, but long term life of the engine is improved by raising the RPM's. 1,000 RPM sound's best and is the stock preset for the Series 60.

I guarantee if you idle an isx at 600 700 rpm when parked for your off time 10 hr break etc you will be replacing the injector cam and rollers at 700,000 or there abouts about a 6 -7000 repair....:biggrin_25523:

i know a motorcycle. that was once famous. and people still want it. but it eats camshafts at 5,000 miles. due to inadequate oil pressure.

    i can't imagine semi's being any different.

i certainly wouldn't want my engine idling with only 10 - 15 pounds of pressure. specially when you consider how far up the engine with all it's little passages the oil has to travel to hit the cams. i think it's a safe bet that what comes out the heads and hits the cams (or the turbo) is lower then what comes out the pump.

The pressure sensor is usually at the top back of the block anyways. You're not seeing pressure at the pump.

Page six of my Cummins owners Manual says:
Internal combustion engines MUST NOT operate at low idle for extended periods of time.
If an engine MUST idle for an extended period of time, it should be done at fast idle (1000 rpm orgreater).

don't think ti really matters what brand the motor is. they're all made the same.

may be designed different. but they all function with the same basic parts. and the same metal alloys.

only different would be the lower oil pressure in the cummins.

Detroit, Cat, Cummins, they're all internal combustion engines.
