In Illinois, if you live on a farm.....you get your CDL without having to take the DMV test. I think because they assume you've been driving tractors all your life.

I ended up driving to West Chicago and rented a truck and trailer to take the test in, I practiced about 1.5 hours and was first to take the test that morning and now have my CDL.
It was this tread that got me looking for rentals to do this. In Illinois I only found two and both were in chicago area.
If anyone else is looking I did find they do them in Tx and also Kansas city area doing 2 states there. I did not check every state but I would imagine someone does this in most of the largest cities.
It can be done, you still would have to find a job and most want a driving school to say your good to go. But some say that the mills are not that good and they have to retrain most of them anyway. So that is not impossible either.
Best of luck.. RandyPmracing Thanks this. -

I'm in chicago where are the two chicagoland services located?

Not sure if I am supposed to put the numbers on here or not but you can find them on craigslist. Both have automatic trucks one has a shorter trailer and other one has a full size trailer.
I rented the one with a full size trailer and was very happy with my choice. They met me at the DMV before they opened and we practiced then and I took the test at 8 am. If you think you need more practice they can meet you the day before also. Depends on how much practice you need for pricing.
Best of luck with it.. Randymrandrelindsey Thanks this. -
In Illinois if your are employed by a farmer all you need is a non cdl b license to drive the farmees semi within so many airbrakes miles of the farm i think its 150 air miles. And has to have farm plates.
