If this truck is "for hire" he needs a CDL... it's called an F endorsement. It's a written test only, no driving. Before I got my Class A, I had an F endorsement and I got a new license that said CDL in the bottom corner and Commercial Driver License across the top. Most of the time when people hear "CDL" they think Class A or Class B and driving tractor trailers and box trucks. Class A and B are just different classes for different weights and combinations, BUT ANY DRIVER that is FOR HIRE needs an F endorsement regardless of vehicle weight. This includes taxi's, sprinter vans, etc. So regardless of whether the vehicle has air brakes or what the weight is, if you are driving commercially, you need a commercial driver license.

Ahh that's interesting. That must be a Pennsylvania thing, it's not required in Texas.

Either way, if the trucks are 33,000 lbs gross then you add the load weight, then yes, those require a CDL. And you might want to mention to your boss that if he's caught doing that, it won't only be the drivers that suffer. In all likelihood he'll get completely shut down.

If you have a class C and the vehicle has air brakes.. You have to have the endorsement. Just like if you have a vehicle and have more than 15 people.. You had best have a bus endorsement. Most of these rental trucks for soccer mom has vacuum breaks. That does not need an endorsement of any kind.

Think of it this way.. What if you were driving this vehicle that is overloaded or by an unqualified driver, how are you going to feel about this employer when your sitting in that little box next to the judge? Or if you kill somebody? Those attorneys would just love to get their hooks on you, your house everything. If you don't think this employer is being legal call the highway patrol in your state and start off.. I need your advice, then you say I need your help. You can use the police to your dis advantage.. Or your advantage.. It is up to you..and is this employer really some place to work at? If that's illegal, what else is? Best of luck.

Look up the regs in your green and white book your company gives you. It's in black and white.

Most Penske moving trucks have air brakes. I have driven many of them since I had to move them from location to location.

Look in the vehicle code book that your state gives you. Those are the laws. Look for an air compressor under the hood. Vacuum brakes are very close to air brakes, but work on vacuum instead of air. Funny thing is that police officer could care less about your little books that he company gives you. But they do care about the motor vehicle code book for their state. With most laws on commercial trucks being very close to every state.

I know the difference between air an "hydraulic" brakes. Cmv licensing laws are the same for all states. It is infact federal.

There is no air brake endorsement there is a restriction. Class c cdl is only for vehicles under 26,001 hauling hazmat. If hauling passengers you need if I remember right a class c with the "p" endorsement. Regardless of weight or air brakes. Please don't be giving incorrect info.
