All of that sounds great...........It's just important to understand that it can NEVER be overstated that:driving a tractor trailer is TOTALLY DIFFERENT than driving non-commercial class c vehicles
good luck btw
Company sponsored training? Whats wrong with being a slave?

I disagreehttp://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/indentured servant
Most indentured servants eat better. I have heard starter company drivers trying to sell their CB's , tools, and company fuel to get money to eat. Training without certification is useless. A negative DAC can ruin a career. -
Was waiting for someone to post this. Lol...
I figured it would be a different ball park. Not Superman so I do have some fear of driving one of those beast. But ultimately I still have that 3rd grade mentality that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. I believe with hard work, most things are possible. Depends on how hard you work/study.
But for those who study and work endlessly and just arent cut out for driving. I guess not everyone is the same. -
I have heard just as many experienced drivers selling their stuff as well. Certification equals a CDL and work history, not some piece of paper that has been made up to look like you got a PHD.

Hah...I was just about to post this. Agreed.
I still cant believe its that bad. Unless you have family, 250 dollars should be enough to survive a week.
Especially being you dont have to pay for gas anymore. You're making that much with a miminum wage job anyway. Unless you can afford another job, or have family, you should expect 8/hr., at least just for the experience. You are out of work or inexperienced to begin with...
If not and you can afford freedom, then in that case I can see why those people would so violently object to anything other than out of pocket.Last edited: Jul 20, 2013

What is certification?
I have not read anything about it.
I thought the only thing jobs look for is your work experience and if you have a CDL..
Never heard of a certification. If I had to guess, I would guess what he means is reports go on your CDL when companies check to hire.
In that case, you can get "certification" (experience) elsewhere. Either way you can still get a negative DAC report even if you are independent, with or without being with a company. Risk? -
There is no certification. It's not like your taking computer classes that require recertification. He is just making that up. If he truly has 35 years in the industry he would know that.
Chinatown Thanks this. -

If you're talking about making what equals to about $8/hour during company training chances are you're not gonna make that. SOME companies pay $500 or so per week but others, like Stevens, only pay about $350 per week for your 70 hours which comes out to about $5/hour. Still others, like Werner, pay per mile and for newbies it often comes out to about $400/week IF they're lucky. However, Werner will allow you to become a trainer after three months which is part of the spiel to attract drivers. Mind-boggling, eh?

Indentured servants don't get a full benefits package and a paycheck. Let's quit splitting hairs on this. On this subject, you sign a contract to work for approximately 12 months in return for a weekly paycheck, benefits package, and entry level training. Due to the recent recession, many who posted on here, were homeless or lost their jobs and homes, so company CDL training saved the day. I just don't see a problem with that. These drivers aren't sitting on the porch at home crying that the government & working taxpayers owe them, simply because they're too lazy to get a job; they saw an opportunity with CDL training and took advantage of it. In todays economy, where else can a high school dropout or an older person with gray hair, go to work making over $65K per year within 18 - 24 months, driving a hazmat tanker? Look at the positive side of this career; if you aren't afraid of your own shadow, and are motivated, the good pay and benefits are there in trucking.
Wanderingaimlessly, Chase05 and warrior81 Thank this.
