What happens if someone goes to company sponsored CDL school, and then quits?

This is probably a totally taboo question, but after reading SO many horror stories and discouraging information on here about the "training companies" (all of them), I just have to ask... If I go through the sponsored training to get my Class-A CDL, and take an OTR job just to get my 1 year of experience to find a better local job, and find out after a couple months that I made a big mistake and am getting totally screwed... What would happen (besides having to pay back the loan)? I mean, I'd have my CDL still, right? I personally don't really believe there is any truth to the "you'll get black balled from the industry" crap. So, what would happen?

I was under contract with USA Truck and quit before training was even complete. I don't run team freight for $300 a week under the guise of training, sorry.

Anyways, I still have my CDL, and I'm paying back the loan at $30 per week, and i have a very good job with a good company. Now, if you don't pay back the loan, they MIGHT be able to take you to court and have your CDL invalidated. But as long as you're willing to pay it back if things go south, then your only issue will just be the debt.

Honestly, I'd recommend getting your CDL on your own and signing on with a company that will train you properly. Maverick does this, as does a few other companies.

If you would rather go to a school, companies such as Prime, FFE, and Celadon will train you. I don't know what it's like driving for them, but their training programs are generally considered decent. I would be much more inclined to go with a school that is owned and operated by the company you want to drive for, as opposed to an independent school that has only a vested interest in you passing the CDL tests. An alternative to that is a community college, which offers the best training, but that's usually a 3 month course and you'll have to pay for it up front typically, unless you get a grant.

Usually, the only time you'll be "black balled" is if you do something really stupid, like cause a fatal accident because you were texting while driving. Some companies sometimes TRY to put false information on your DAC report, but those that have done this usually lose a lawsuit and end up paying six figures to the driver. You probably won't run into that when it comes to CDL school, just because those companies aren't out any real money if you quit - you'll end up owing the school itself, not the company.

I don't see anyone being able to "invalidate your CDL", but they can certainly get a judgement against you and/or send your note to a credit collection agency once they write off the loss (meaning you get what could amount to a significant ding on your credit report) But if your credit is not that good anyway, this may not be a concern, but good or so-so credit is extremely valuable and bad credit will cost you money and opportunities as you will find out sooner or later.

Yeah, I've heard this a couple times, but was never able to verify if a school was actually successful in getting someone's CDL revoked. I know they'll threaten you with it, but that's a big gray area without any specific laws to deal with it. And of course, whichever state issued the CDL would have to be the ones to revoke it, and they may not even be willing to do so.

That's why I said MIGHT, because I don't know for sure, but ignoring the loan is not a good idea in any case. Like my fellow Texan says, it'll destroy your credit, and good credit is so hard to get back it's not even funny.

I am very well experienced in this area LOL. And they can put it on there for 7 years, but what a lot of people don't know is that if they keep updating it, they can keep it on there for a lot longer than that. I have stupid things I did back when I was 18 that are still on my report, and I'm 30 now.

They send Vinny to your house and he'll ask you one time to pay up..if you dont Vinny will bust your kneecaps as he ransacks your mom's basement for anything of value, but if you need a company to pay for your training it's not likely you have anything of value so you'll just have busted kneecaps !

You will have to pay back the loan or have a negative mark on your credit report but you will not lose your CDL.

Do the research... do the math... and "if" you make a commitment, stick to it.

    It's just that easy...

Don't forget that Vinny has dark sunglasses and sounds like Robert DeNiro in "Analyze This."
