My husband wants a better CB. His birthday is in May and I want to surprise him. I know NOTHING about this stuff. He says he's heard good things about a Galaxy DX95T. I've checked it out online and the closest dealer to us seems to be in West Memphis, AK. With tax and all it will run about $450-$500. Is there one better or does anyone know of a dealer in Memphis, TN or North MS? I am willing to pay more if need be. In ten years of driving this is the first time he's really asked for an upgrade so I want it to be one that will be good for a long time.
Trucker's wife....need CB advice.

Galaxy makes a great radio. I have a 919 in my pick up, and it's definitely better than the Cobra 29 I have in my bus. Although it's a good radio too. Only Galaxy Dealer I know in my area is Cookies' CB in Livingston, La. I have to pass by there today. I'll ask him if he knows anyone your way.

I agree Galaxies are great radios a little expensive. Cobra 29s In my opinion is a great CB you can do a lot to them he can take it to a CB shop and get it tuned (usually about $20 bucks depending on whats done)it will work just as good as anything. My dad has had his for years. I bought mine and its been great. If you get the cobra 29 if you can afford it and he is over the road. Get the one with night watch and the whether band(About $100-$130).
Mine is:
Cobra 29WXNW-ST
- Night watch
- whether band
- Noise limiter(limits noise)
Multi. color light(for looks)
2 boards for extra power
Hope this helps you out. -
Thank You. I would really appreciate that. -
His 29 is what I have. He'll be happy with that. Just make sure it's a nightwatch with weather band. Those are very useful features.

i like nextel , or a cobra with sideband is nice too

LOL Nextel... I hate nextels, but then again I had to carry one to be on call 24x7 for several years. Any time I hear that beep I get chills down my spine.
As for the DX95T, that's a hot little 10-meter Ham radio. They'll do 50w PEP AM or 150w PEP SSB right out of the box.
But like any high power radio, you can't "legally" run it above 4w or so on teh 11-meter (CB) frequencies, and you can't "legally" run it on ANY 10-meter (Ham) frequency without a ham license. Also like any high power radio, if the SWR is out, you'll fry the finals to a crisp. SWR of 1.3:1 or better required to run big watts. Anything more is a recipe for wasted money.
In my opinion $400-500 is too much to spend on a radio that only swings 50w... but Galaxy makes quality equipment and their dealer/service network is huge. Also, that's just the "out of the box" figure- supposedly they can be pushed much harder than this.
On the other hand, the General series (Lee, Washington, etc) made by Connex (other than the exterior, it's pretty much the same radio as a Connex 3300HP) are also good quality radios w/ strong power ratings. They are also 10-meter or "Export" radios. You can pick up a brand new Lee for about $200 + s/h. They don't have built in frequency counters like that Galaxy does, but they do have the standard plug on the back to add a frequency counter to the radio. Also, I'm not sure if I remember or not, but I don't think the Connex does SSB either- not sure if that matters to hubby or not.
For the record, the Connex 3300HP and its variants make that model one of the top 5 most popular radios...
In closing, since choice of radio to a driver is just as important as his/her preference in what equipment they drive, I'd say if hubby has asked for a DX95T then he's probably thought it out and knows exactly what he wants. Feature sets vary wildly from radio to radio, and some radios lend themselves well to modifications. If hubby has in mind a certain type of modification he wants to do to a radio, he may need X radio because that mod may not work with Y radio, if you follow my meaning. On the other hand, Y radio may not require that mod because it is a standard feature.
Shop around, don't be afraid to get one off the web. There are a lot of reputable radio shops on the web. GI Joe's is advertising a DX95T refurb for about $350. Also, I think the DX95T is discontinued, replaced by the DX95T2, still priced between $400-500.
On the other hand, if he's really just wanting some talking power- a better investment may be to pair his existing CB with a nice amp. You can pick up a 500-watt 2-pill Fatboy linear for about $200, couple that w/ cheap mod to alter teh deadkey wattage of the existing CB, and at the flip of a switch your hubby is skippin' to the moon.
Of course that sort of setup is no more "legal" than a 50-watt export radio... and is even more susceptible to fried finals if the SWR is not spot-on.
Best of luck in getting the info you need from him to make an educated decision without giving away the gift idea. -
