same thing here i have a cdl class a and nobody is hiring newbies. Their insurance policies are screwing new drivers.

no, new drivers that run off the road and tear equipment up are screwing the new drivers.

Oh I'm sorry, I thought you're speaking about looking a job in North Dakota and that's why I said that. Just a misunderstanding.

you have probably done this alrdy...but make sure you actually call some of the places...becuz they had lots of ads for where i am too...then when it came down to it...they had LONG waiting lists....even tho they had new ads up...so you might wanna make some calls...i would hate to see you make the move...and not be able to find a place.....

My friend working for Mission in Corpus Christi, 1 bedroom apartment cable included, $750, no trouble finding it. He said there are agencies that will find you an apartment at no cost to you.

corpus christi is NOT WEST texas, where housing is nonexistent.

Totally different geography and social economic area.

I would agree. I have classmates from my Sparks, NV. CDL School who've started with Knight, ITS & Swift, out of Sparks, and they're making $400 a week for the first 6-8 weeks during their training phase, which is the standard in the industry. After that training period ITS pays $0.28/ mile which by my math is about $700/week for a 2,500 mi. week. You can have that job as I would find work driving OTR too boring for me.

I OTOH, got a job with my "2 week old" CDL-A TX at $16/ hr. After finishing my 7th week OTJ, I'm averaging $1,200 week; I will look for a raise in 5 more weeks. Another guy here hired on at the same time and with the same credentials as I (meaning no experience and fresh CDL) at $18/hr. Him being a local guy is the only reason I can figure why he started at $2 more per hour. Or it could be that I have no verifyable employment history / job references to check as I've been living in Asia for 10 years and mostly self employed since 1989.

Last summer I went to ND. to get one of these "Oil" jobs I heard about requiring no experence, they were gone. I was lacking a resume and was uncomfortable having to fill out "booklet-sized" job applications, so I didnt. Then I found out about a free 3 week Natural Gas & Oil training class (ShaleNET dot org) in Steubenville, OH. I knew this class would give me the needed skills to land a job in this industry so I applied for the next class which was 2 months later. After a few weeks in Williston I learned I needed to get a CDL so I searched the country for a school and signed up.

Now, EVEN with a CDL in hand and a nice certificate from my ShaleNET training class (which was valuable training) but the fact that I now didn't have a car (I rented for 1 month to job-hunt here)... I was very worried and severely lacking confidence in being able to find a job. ALL the CDL job adds I've read want 1-3 years VERIFIABLE employment AND reliable transportation - I have NEITHER!
But yet I found a job, one that I really enjoy.

As I've learned from countless days of reading over this forum, you won't find a job from a distance. Get some courage to travel outside of your comfort zone, get a plan (I made mine from the info in this forum), get money saved up AND COME TO TEXAS! There's jobs here, if you can just fund yourself to look for them.

    Good luck & Safe Driving
