I've been a regional independent operator for three years. Currently, I drive a chemical tanker for an owner of 10 trucks. I run within 600 miles of home, and am home 2 to 3 nights during the week, and every weekend. I would love to get my own truck and be my own boss....staying just as close to home, and making close to the same dough...which is 1000 per week gross. Tanker, or flatbed....is it doable???

Sure, it is doable. But a grand a week clear for a local O/O gig is on the high side. You will probably work harder, give up some time off, have more aggravations. Check with some of the contacts you have made over the years with the tanker, research the advertisements, ask other drivers about your area's freight. If it is steady $$ you need, stay where you are.

Sure is. I "lease" to a local co. when needed. I pull my wagon or theirs as needed. I'm mostly retired. Stay in Tx most of the time. Don't ever burn bridges, it has a way of biting your back pocket. I just say my truck won't do it. Sounds better than shove it. I don't work for Mc Wages.

I just have to convince the boss at home....she needs me home to help with the little ones...but i love trucking. it is what im born to do. Driving someone elses truck is getting old, and i really only need to clear 40 grand a year...gross. im thinking that going back to flatbeds is the best option...or operate both tanks and flats....just get a midroof.

I don't do dollar amounts. I make enough to make me happy. Sometimes I run my butt off. Other times I go fishing. Wife & kid passed away, truck is paid for. Have no real answer for you. If you want it bad enough, it can be done. All the best, Tramp.

I guess, if you want to take a tremendous cut in pay. Why are you going to settle for $1,000.00 per weak gross. Pun intended. I'm in Central Texas and I'm rather lazy, I pull in $2k to $4k. When I'm charging hard, it is $4K to $7K.

They say intermodal has the worst rates but I can get 2k in a good week after fuel and expenses.

Really is that all? You charge hard and ONLY make $4K to $7K a week??? ####, when I charge hard I make at least $35,000 a week! And that is when I running legit DOT book hours. If I'm running two books with me I can do bout $60K a week.

Dude, if you gonna make up BS....... ya might as well run that hard too.

Well here is a true fact for the non believers like Redbone...I make approx 8k a week with my truck and only put on about 2000 miles to do it. Its all about working smarter, not harder. With experience you will learn this if you are willing. My figures are after expenses by the way.
