whenever I see somebody on the side of the road I will move over but not quite all the way to the left, I will move just enough to straddle BOTH lanes to keep anybody from passing me on either side ...Works well as most 4 wheelers just hang back... its the super truckers that get pissed and tailgate waiting for me to pick a lane which is the right hand lane when I passed the broke down...

gotta echo the others that mentioned the checking your air pressure on the shoulder, don't. Not even mentioning the danger of being next to the road like you were, that tire is basically a bomb after it's been rolling for hours on hot pavement. Letting air out of it is a very bad idea.

Few thoughts. Years back, coworker was stopped on the side of I-90 just into Wyoming with a blowout. Tire repair was on scene, multiple flashing lights, he and the mechanic were standing on the barpit side of the trailer. Another truck came by, hit the repair truck, rammed it into the back of the trailer, debris knock both of them on their #####. They each spent a few weeks in the hospital. Other driver was charged with careless driving resulting in an accident.
I always slow or change lanes away from a stopped/disabled vehicle (when possible), whether occupied or not. You just never know.
Back in '02, I had a blowout on I-76 about Ovid. CSP stopped to check on me, he approached on the passengers side of the truck and made me get out on that side. Average speed of traffic was 82 mph, while he and I were talking, we counted 2 dozen vehicles of all sizes that didn't change lanes away from us, just stupid.peterbilt_2005 Thanks this. -
