I was lucky enough to come across this site while researching for my next career. I do not have my CDL and am wondering what the best way is to go about getting it. I live in southern Minnesota and have checked out some companies that train like Roehl and Monson and also some professional truck driving schools. I'd love to hear some advice from you experienced guys that have already been through all of this.

Ben check out Midwest Coast Transport in Sioux Falls, SD. They have a 3 week school that consists of classroom, pad, and road training. I went through this course in August of 1999 and felt they did a very good job of training me. They are very high on safety and professionalism. After the three weeks in Sioux Falls you will then go out otr with a trainer for around 50,000 miles (I received mileage pay for this part of the training), and then go back to Sioux Falls and take a road test to qualify to become a first seat driver. If you drive for MCT for at least one year there is no cost for the training.

MCT is a company that is made up entirely of owner operators and independent fleets leased to MCT. I worked for a family owned company out of Tracy, MN that at the time had about 28 tractors leased to MCT.

If you Google Comcar Industries, go to their website, then click on the drop down box and click on MCT, it will take you to the MCT website where you can learn more about MCT and the drivers training program. If you click on the Fleet Operators link and then on Minnesota it will lead you to a list of upper midwest fleets leased to MCT. I would encourage you to call Sam at A,M&S Trucks and talk to him about the process and possible employment with his company. Sam is a great guy, runs newer well maintained tractors, and treated me well while I was employed by him.

Good luck with your future career decisions.
