I'm going to be starting flatbed soon, coming from the van side of things. My question is I looked on amazon for strap winders and there are 2 different types. What kind do the guys that use them everyday prefer?

I have the kenadyne strap winder that hooks to the rub rail for storing straps in the side box. Works well keep a glove on though or it'll give your hand blisters in a couple straps. I don't store straps on the winches but if I did I'd just get a drill, stick that in there and zip em all right up. I have done the rolling straps up by hand as well takes forever and a day but it works too.
http://kinedyne.com/products/109/strap-winder.html#product-list This is the list of strap winders. 2 for storing on winches 2 for rolling up to put in the side box. I have the one at the very bottom. I like that one and it keeps the strap rolled up neatly. works on all straps, now the one above it the "standard" winder I have used before I don't care for them as much because my straps become a mess pretty quick as I can't roll them up as fast like I usually do. I'd recommend the premium one and be done with it. I paid $20 or so for mine money was well spent. My ratcheting winch bar not so much but oh well it happens.indianaEMT Thanks this. -
Hmm, I'm going with tmc, I wonder if they store straps on the winches or in the box.

Tmc you will store your straps in the headache rack. I80 truck stop sells rud rail strap winders in there store. Like the middle on in 379exhd link. I have it and works well. Or store them in the side box, TMC does not like them stored on the winch nor will your pocket book when they come up missing or cut. Hope this helps.

I have the second from the bottom 10094. I throw my straps away from the trailer then roll them up.

Last time I seen a TMC truck that was empty he had no straps on the winches. I cannot say it's not a big deal one way or the other to be honest I wouldn't recommend throwing that hook end for numerous reasons though.
Mr.X Thanks this. -
that's too much work lol. I make a pile start grabbing and winding. I will say after looking at both designs the "premium" one is probably a worse design. I like my straps wrapped tight and getting them off that fricken thing can be a royal PITA since it doesn't have a set screw to secure it to the rub rail.

I assume the one you have to can pull it apart to get the strap off to wind another one up?
-
I had a 10094 and a 10091 and have broken both. The 10091 did last me about 9 months where as the 10094 would last me anywhere from 6 months down to 2 days. Yes 2 days but that was the roadpro one from a Pilot. Pretty much the same thing just is not build as good IMO. If you have a welder or know somebody with one they are pretty easy to fix and make much stronger. Its just the welds on them that suck pretty much.

ya i got the 10094 as well i love it but if it's only a couple of straps then i will wind by hand...well untill i get a chance to reorganize my box where it doesnt take an act of congress to dig the friggin winder out
379exhd Thanks this.
