I am looking into buying my own truck and hauling freight from sites like direct freight and selling my bol's to a finance company so i can get paid within 24 hrs of delivery.they take 5% of total invoice
also which is the best way to price a 40k lb load going 250 miles ?
has anyone done this or are doing this currently ??
thanks

I use "The Internet Truckstop" to get my freight. It costs me about $30 a month. A load going about 250 miles regardless of weight, I want about $550 - $600. It will take about an hour to load if the shipper is squared away. The load will take about 5 hours driving time to reach its destination # 50 mph avg. It will take about an hour to unload if they are doing their job the way they can. That is about 7 hrs if everything goes right, which it seldom does. By the time this load is completed you will only have enough time to book your next load, and drive to the next shipper, legally so I would basically charge them for the whole day $550 - $600.

thanks,
i was thinking a little bit more for the load of 250 miles , im in the north east so i might get it, im trying to set this operation up where i run and get home everyday .. I,m hoping it works out -
Profit margins are so tight as an owner op that giving away 5% just to save some time is setting yourself up for disaster

I figure it this way , to keep moving for the first 6-8 months being fresh i will give up the 5% to build my cushin or if i have a breakdown i know i dont have to panic . or until i start pulling freight for certin places on a daily basis Im looking at it in that perspective.

You'r free to try, it's america but if you do that on all your loads there won't be a cushion to save up. You do that on the loads from brokers you arn't real sure of, not all of them.
Take advances to pay for your fuel and wait on the money. if you are that tight that you have to give up $1200 (and up) a month just to get money NOW, then chances are you need a better business plan -
this is true and real fact, that you are saying i deffinatly agree, this is why i am doing 200 % looking into everything before i go and make the big purchase, I want to have all grounds covered and everything in order giving up over a grand a month is not healthy .

Bronc has his business plan posted around here somewhere. Take a look at it. There is also some sample sreadsheets around. I would say with the way freight rates are right now and if you have a truck payment then you'll be out of business in a few months. with low rates and high fuel there just isn't the profit margin in trucking right now unless you can find a niche. And if you are worrying about brokers paying then I assume you are talking about running your own authority which brings on a whole nother level of headaches

I know the rates are low , I have distant family in trucking that has been in biz for 50 years, but working for family is useless. I have been talking to a cousin who runs it in northeast part of the country and getting pointers there as well, I dont think I will deal with brokers at first id rather get the bol's signed off and sel them to a finance company and get my money next day for now .... I want to se if its better to lease new and warrenties up the wazoo or buy a 30k truck and have more headaches...
its still makin more money then drivin for ltl company that can send you home with 35hr for the week -
