a funny thing happened to me on the way to my very first fuel stop......
I picked up my tractor in the last week of august '07 in Tucson AZ it was hot, real hot! I only had 3/16 of a tank when I got it and was told to hook to an empty trailer and go over to the local truck stop ( the TTT the only game in town)
well I get assigned early in the morning after idling all night and head over to the address provided by the airport (that is important later) actually I should have went back to the eagle terminal, I got the whole thing straightened out dropped the mt werner trailer and hooked a dollar general trailer loaded with dunnage.
I headed out of town east and the closest fuel stop was Wilcox AZ 80+ miles down the road as I pulled off the interstate and was coming down the other side of the overpass the truck died!
I "armstronged" it around the corner but the fuel island was slightly up hill.
I literally got within 15' of the hoses and ran out of momentum. I got a mechanic to pull me up to the hoses with a forklift and he helped me prime the system (didn't have to pull the filters!) and she started!
I put 186 gallons in the 2, 120 gallon tanks and at least this good came out of it, I know EXACTLY how much fuel I can run thru my truck before I need to find a truck stop.
oh yeah, by going over to the Tuscon airport I used just enough fuel that I ran out in Wilcox![]()

When you are very low on fuel, shut off the engine the moment you notice a loss of power.
I stopped at the house for lunch, intending to fuel at the cut-rate station about 10 miles away. Burky, do you remember the gas station on the east side of exit 30, I-94, that had a diesel pump around back? When turning onto the entrance ramp near the house, the 8V71 seemed to loose power. I parked on the ramp and shut off the engine; walked two blocks to the house; emptied the 5-gallon gas can into the car; drove the car to the cut-rate fuel stop; etc. Anyway, the 8V71 cranked right up with the additional 5 gallons and made it to the fuel stop.
Here is another one. I was in the sleeper and my lead driver had been traveling the old roads because we were prohibited from the tunnels on the Pennsylvania Turnpike with a load of explosives. The rig was shut off and parked on the shoulder. I looked out of the curtain to see my lead driver walking back toward the rig with two 5-gallon cans. He had walked to a gas station where he mixed motor oil and gasoline to make diesel. The rig ran fine to the next truck stop. -
Whew! You got a rise out of me. Almost the same as when my wife asked if her and her friend can take out my 68 Plymouth GTX 440 Six Pack out to go shopping!!!!!
Her MINIVAN broke down. I about had a heart attack when she touched my keys.:smt067 I don't even drive it except on special occasions and to show off. You noticed I said ALMOST. She and her friend got it that day. Her friend said, "I don't see what the big deal is, its just a car, my boyfriend lets me drive his Mustang all the time, and its newer then yours, its a 2001"!!!!!!
I told her tell your boyfriend that and see what he says! Long story short, her boyfriend lit into her too.
So all you Georgia boys, if you see a gray 68 GTX 440; yesssiiirrrr that be me! Check my tags it will have my name on it!!!!
