Was the trailer supposed to have a seal on it?

You should have sealed it and rolled on.

That's kind of the kicker right there. You are right that anything could have happened to it before you got to it but you also covered yourself by letting dispatch know what the deal was. At the very least you should have looked inside. Good catch on the seal, I'm sure there are many drivers who would not even think to check the door for one.

I had a simuliar problem w/a load in CT (no the seal was intact when I p/u in drop yard) I work nights too but 2 full & a partial load was rejected because they sent the wrong product, Dispatch wanted me to take the picture in a dark trailer & email it to him ASAP but my dumbphone does'nt have flash luckily I also carry a regular digital camera w/flash with me as well & was able to send 2 good pics via email when I got home but now I had to take it to the drop yard in NJ but the female guard on duty did'nt want it dropped because of no seal & paperwork Luckily again the shipper was a few blocks away & I got a seal fm them & have change & initial the BOL & make copies so I went back to the yard new seal intact & gave her a copy of the BOL in case they wanted to add on to other product going back to the original shipping point (One of their facilities in PA)..Story is the security on duty that Sat morning did'nt want to be responsible for a dropper trailer w/a partial load w/no seal or paperwork or she'd be in trouble for allowing it to happen & no one would know it was in the yard..Dispatch told me to put a new seal but w/o the extra precaution (The lady guard suggested to go to the shipper) it would probably end up being a Hot Mess...You're learn to use your best judgment to keep yourself in the clear of liability the company should be responsible for esp. now w/CSA you can't afford it........Nuff Said

If the bills didnt even note a seal number at all then you had absolutely nothing to worry about. If the bills did note a specific seal number but it was missing, then you did the right thing by calling in. You should have just followed the instructions from dispatch and if they came back to you later with questions just explain again what happened.

My lead driver and I delivered a load of munitions without a seal. I think we were in Bremerton, back in 1968 or '69. After a long delay involving the FBI, the seal was located on the shipper's desk in Grand Island.

Alright I have to ask who the hell doesn't check for the seal during a pretrip when picking up a trailerunless running ltl?

I bet that was a fun deal. I would've firgured the ATF would've got involved instead of the FBI.

The old flimsy metal seals can be "broken" and re-sealed without notice, if you know how to do it. I've encountered this a few times over the years.

I'm going to guess that's why you don't see many of them anymore. Now to fix that problem...did it involve a soldering iron and some rosin core solder? Just out of curiosity?

Scratch out seal on bol and put another one on trailer :D Well I never had this issue, there are places that do not require seals and I put one of my own on it anyway.
