So after seeing a few other people posting about prime and their experience with the company, I decided to join in. It was very helpful seeing what other people experienced on their new journey with prime and it helped me make my decision to join prime. I only hope what I share will also contribute to this forum and help others.
If you have any questions please do ask.
I started the prime training program August 8, 2013. So as of today I am still in the training. They also call it the PSD program for prime student driver. I actually got here on the 12th from the greyhound bus that they paid for.

First of all, take the greyhound if you live far away from Missouri, At least that is the location of my training. You honestly do not have time to drive around when you are here. Yeah I thought about it but there really is no need. While you are in training the first 4 days, you will be busy. If you are not busy then there is something wrong. I got here on a Monday, a day early. Prime Takes care of its potential employees. I had a room ready, food and amenities available to me even before I was supposed to be here. I enjoyed my first day here before actually starting the training program Tuesday August 13th.
Again ask questions and I will try to answer to the best of my knowledge. -
Will Prime hire a student driver with no experience onto their flatbed division or do all students start off on a reefer?
thanks -
Grats on getting on, make sure to keep your cb off while riding down the istate.

First you may luck out and run into someone from flatbed who instructs, and be with a flatbed guy from the start. There aren't that many of them, so how long do you want to wait for the Flatbed Godmother to bang you on the head with her magic winch bar? By far there are more reefer guys who instruct or train than there are flatbed or tanker guys. Being assigned to reefer for CDL instruction and training isn't a bad deal. Mostly your looking for experience maneuvering a large combination vehicle, backing, and staying out of trouble. It doesn't really require a particular kind of trailer for that.
Once your training is done, it's not that difficult to get over to the flatbed side. Mostly, it involves introducing yourself to the guys over in flatbed dispatch, and getting it all arranged. If you do all of your training on the reefer side, you'll most likely do the flatbed boot camp, and go out with a flatbed trainer for 30 days. Whether you start in reefer and end up in flatbed, or are with flatbed the whole ways... in the end you'll be where you want to be. Keep in mind that training is a very small yet important part of a much larger career. -
Day 1
lets remember guys and gals, during the 4 days of orientation and initial 10,000 miles before you have your CDL, you are not a Prime employee as of yet. But.... Prime does treat you 100% as a prime employee. You will feel the welcoming environment.
the started at 7 am with the orientation. Yes there will be a lot of people in class with you. Mine was about 60 people. There is a reason for it though. By day 3, when I got to the cafe for breakfast, there may have been 30-40 people. Will got into more detail later.
Day 1 is mainly all paperwork and medical exam/drug screen. Be prepared to be waiting, sitting more waiting, mores paperwork and listen.
After all the testing, you will do the interview portion which is just going through your paperwork and pay your admin fee of $100.
After those initial items are done, computer testing is next. Simple and easy, just pay attention. This is part of your study for the permit/cdl and company policies. -
Day 2
so far, I think day 2 was the most productive. Early studying started at 7am and permit testing started at 8:30am. People from the license branch actually come out here and get setup for you to take the permit tests on site. Very helpful. You get to take the test twice a day for 3 days if you need too. I did pass my tests the first try on day 2. Afterwards, I just had to wait to get my letter of residency and medical card before heading to the BMV. While waiting, you can practice in the simulators and they are great. I got to say, ounce you have your permit or if you came with your permit, if is easy from there. At least from a stress standpoint. -
