Tarps:
I was looking on uscargocontrol.com and found some lumber tarps 24'x27' w/8' drops 18oz in blue for $430. Can I beat that anywhere?
Steel tarps are 16'x27' w/4' drops $360
Chain Binders:
snap or rachet? I have that over tightening is an issue on the ratchet binders, however I have not heard of a death from one opening.
I have worked up a list of stuff: (Let me know if I missed anything.)
2 Lumber tarps
2 steel tarps
20 4" winch straps
2 2" ratchet straps
10 5/16" G70 chain (16' or 20'-haven't decided what is beat)
10 binders
6 6' beveled oak timbers
6 4' beveled oak timbers
10 coil racks
4 mudflaps cut into strips
20 ea plastic/cardboard edge protectors
8 corner protectors
8 V-boards
10 steel corner protectors
cheater bar
strap winder
crap-ton of rubber bungees
What else?
What to get?

Take a visit to a pawn shop in Houston.

are you flat or step.
i've had loads that needed 12 chains. and 14 binders. but not often though. 4 2" ratchet straps. 20 edge protectors gets you 10 straps. but what if you need 2 protectors on each side of the load????
i think 16 ft chains should suffice. don't know about others but i haven't had a need for 20 feet unless it's cars. but 5/16 is too heavy to throw and cars don't pay anyways.
24 wide tarps means 8 foot drops.
it's a good starting kit. but you'll quickly find it's not enough.
if you're pulling step. 2 40ft straps. i get loads all the time that no one bothers telling me is tall and hangs off the back top deck. 30 feet isn't long enough.
you don't have dunnage on your list. or rope. steel toed shoes, safety vest and hard hat.
what's the beveled oak timbers????
and if you can find snap binders. i'd like to know where. i've got 3 trailer shops at home and they only sell ratchets.Last edited: Aug 20, 2013

Looks like a good list.
I would have a few more 2" portables, carpet for padding and some furniture blankets.
Snap binders are faster I carry 12 of them and 2 ratchet binders. Once in awhile the ratchets are handy to have.
You should probably have some 8' dunnage. -
There is also Tarp Stop and Tricounty tarp in Ohio. I don't haul lumber so can't help you there. I'd try to get some 8' 4X4's that way you can put them across the trailer and get rub rail to rub rail if you need it. Say like you are loading bundles of bar steel. But you can make what you are thinking of work too. I like to carry 8 16' chains and 4 20'ers. then you do not have to deal with an extra 4' of chain. Just depends what you haul most of the time. I like ratchet binders myself but always keep a few snap binders on the trailer. The more you do it the better you will get at knowing how tight is tight enough. Probably would get a few more 2" straps. It just depends what you do and plan on doing.

A hammer and tape measure. Some scissors and HH-66 vinyl cement for patching tarps.
-
Couple pair of overalls to wear while secureing loads. Throwing tarps can be messy.

53' Flat, I did mean 40 Corner protectors for some reason i typed 20.
Beveled timbers are dunnage, coils lay in the bevel timbers in the coil racks. Snap binders are available at http://www.uscargocontrol.com/Flatbed-Trailer-Products/Transport-Chain-Chain-Binders
MJ1657 I can always use two 4' timbers to make 8'. Did that a few times at Western. -
whats beveled timbers??? youre kidding , right? -
That makes sense on the dunnage.
