All petroleum companies have their own special blend that is added to the gas. But the difference between regular and mid grade or premium is Butane. And I know that at least in Reno Nv most of the gas is generic and blended with the specific secret additive at loading. I hauled ARCO and we would have to go get the additive and fill the additive tank. The same with diesel, except they would put in any additive at the drop point.

Most fuel companies around here barely break even. We have a strong lube division and that's what makes the company money. Other than that, we don't turn a profit.

There are gas stations, not owned by BP, that sell BP branded fuels.

    The octane rating.

Midgrade (89 octane) is a 65/35 blend of regular (87 octane) and premium (93 octane). Sometimes the rack blends it for you, sometimes you have to "splash blend" by adding the correct quantities of both into a compartment on your trailer.

As the base is pumped through the rack, additives are injected into the stream, downstream from the meter. Additives are what brands the fuel. If the fuel to be loaded is generic (unbranded), then a non-branded additive package is injected.

Butane is what makes the difference.the higher the butane..the higher the octane.

Also, adding a 10% ethanol blend to 87 octane regular boosts the octane to 89 and allows you to sell it as mid-grade (or premium in North Dakota). In ethanol regions, a lot of the majors are bringing in sub-grade gasoline(BP has been doing this for years) and blending 10% ethanol to get the 87 octane rating for regular.

i didn't know that ethanol had more BTUs than gasoline. I know about 3 months ago that gas that I bought in Nebraska had that.. It was junk. And my mileage dropped way down. Do you know why they started to put ethanol in gas to begin with? Clue it's not to supposedly clean the air.
