Why is it so hard to find good drivers?

It is hard to attract good drivers away from where they currently work. Without knowing that your pay, benefits, and equipment is significantly better than where a guy works now, why would he leave to come to you. I am a good driver. 20 years experience, clean record, no felonies, no Dui's, and I am willing to work hard. If a company wants to get my attention, they have to impress me first. Not the other way around. Just my 2 cents.

 

Agree.^you pay for what you get. Vet drivers with clean records don't just walk in the door. A test drive says a lot about a driver.

 

I wanted to be a truck driver. I made it. Takes learning, work, desire, & practice. I started at a garbage company. Just sold a 150,000.00 Custom Freightliner. My Truck. If you want it that bad anything is in your grasp. By Bug was driving. Some are aircraft. I just like Trucks.

 

Sorry Mister, if you can't get it out of the building, we will need to take the building apart. I have a driver waiting.

 

That, And i'll add that most drivers are leery of trucking co owners because most talk the talk, But fail miserably at walking the walk.

Not all, But the vast majority. And i'm not angry. I'm just tired of BS from trucking management.
I deal with them on the towing side, and they still think they have leverage.. i just laugh

I understand your frustration, however I disagree, respectfully. I do not like the blanket statement you made about how all these drivers care about is money. That's untrue. Most do yes, most are concerned about pay for one reason...... and follow me here......its not 1974 anymore. I get the third degree from a couple of older gentlemen at my job all the time telling me how I should be happy with what I've got and that I should stay put. I work circles around them while they just spin their wheels. They treat me like I haven't earned it yet... so 9-10 years isn't good enough? And i am most certainly not a supertrucker. Well the truth is I am happy but i do feel i am worth more. I do own my own place and I don't have bills...... but its 2013 trucker deisel aint no $1.10/gal. Milk is $4 gallon. Food prices are out of control regardless if you eat out of your truck and make your own food or if you eat fast food which is even more expensive and god forbid if you have children.. I think asking that question is important because right away when I hear your answer. My mind tries to figure up how my paycheck will split up to mortgage, insurance, bills, food, then what's leftover goes into savings.

The problem you are having is a basic misconception/not in his or her shoes problem. It has nothing to do wether they are a good worker or not because you already don't like the applicant for asking a basic question. Of course you are going to get some worthless bum applicants but just from the little bit I've seen on this thread, you are way too disconnected with your drivers.

If I had to guess you live a pretty comfortable life and you aren't at the bottom anymore. You have been "up top" and times have changed all around and things are different down here now. I repeat, its not 1974 anymore.
