Been driving a year. No accidents or tickets. Did smash up a landing gear. Looking to get more home time. Ltl would be nice. Any advice. Located in greensboro and rockingham area. I reside in either or.

That 1 year OTR, opens lots of doors..check Careerbuilder and Indeed websites.

If you have tanker endorsement, probably get on with a cement company hauling dry cement powder or flyash.

    Marksteven Thanks this.

Exactly, if you have a full year then start dropping applications every where you see a daycab fleet. Especially LTL/food service outfits.

Thanks, so far. I'm gonna call old dominion tomorrow and see what they have. Never thought about concrete trucks. Had a friend that used to do the pump truck. Made pretty good money at it.

I've hauled lots of dry bulk cement & flyash. Dusty & noisy, but home every day, if that's important. Many of those loads go to construction sites, roadbuilding sites, etc. easy money.

Greatwide may have something in your area; lots of dedicated food service accounts.

What kind of home time you getting now? Epes out of Greensboro isn't bad if you don't mind running 63 with an elog. Weekly home time but it varies on the days you're in and how long. But we do get in just about every weekend. Good equipment, good pay and pretty stable freight base. Pretty decent gig unless you're looking to be home every day.

I came home off the road after 14/15 months not but 30 days ago.
In that thirty days I found a local driving job in two days after being home, I hadn't even been dropping applications prior to coming home.

I live in N/E Ohio, where there's not a lot of work- and I got a job that pays extremely well for the area. So much so, I'm almost making as much as my father whom has a Bachelors degree and has been doing the same job with the same company for over 20 years. (it's $16/h, time and a half over 40 with double on holidays.) To boot I'm getting all thee overtime I can handle and still getting job offers, four weeks later.

That year OTR really made a measurable difference in my earning potential. The only thing I wish I'd done differently is gotten more endorsements on my license, even without the experience- it's a benefit to have them for a while.
If I had my TWIC enhancement I could be making $20 an hour with double time after 40. Which I'm planning to do next year.

Oh, part of this is, I'm lucky enough to be on the ground floor in an area where Fracking is just starting up.

(BTW, Labor day I made nearly $300 just on my holiday pay.)
Coming home was worth it, strangely I kind of miss OTR, though.

In the eyes of some newer generation and most of the old school guys, if you don't like OTR, your not a real truck driver. Only thing I liked being local was the money but it was a regular 9-5 plus it was boring and provided no challenges.

Like my cubicle sales job. Make a bunch of money, but after 20 years I want out. Bored beyond belief. Wanna hit the road. Is that nuts? I know I am going to do it once I sell my house.
