are you able to move more than 300lbs with or without a mechanical aid?

"Must be able to perform frequent pushing of freight weighing up to 500 pounds on a dolly or cart as well as occasional pushing of freight weighing more than 300 pounds with or without a mechanical aid."

this is one of the qualifications listed by one of the trucking companies i am researching, i want to get some more practical info from the pros before i call them

i am in pretty good shape, i can bench press 300 lbs with my legs but i only weigh 150lbs and am pretty sure i would not be able to "move" an item that heavy without mechanical aid, do they mean one must be able to pick up 300lbs and carry it without straining? or just be able to slide it around? these methods sound unsafe for the cargo and the driver

many times i have moved bulky very heavy items on my own using floor dollies i custom built or a heavy-duty dolly and bungie cords, and i would be willing to invest in an electric dolly to increase the load i can handle by myself

i was thinking they impose this qualification because their cargo might sometimes be in tight spots so driver cannot possibly get her dolly equipment in place to access it, so it's on her alone to move it, is this qualification a way for the employer to eliminate applicants who cannot actually push 300+lbs due to those situations that they know driver will actually face?

300 lbs on a pallet jack is not heavy at all. Anyone that can do any manual labor should be able to do that. You should have no problems. Lightweight freight.

No, you won't have to physically lift and transfer 300 lbs, however this does sound like an ad for a local pickup and delivery or other freight distribution outfit where driver unload (and perhaps load) is part of the job. That in and of itself spells a lot of work that may or may not pay accordingly. This would involve physically picking up each and every case totaling perhaps 40,000 lbs and placing it on a pallet or dolly and putting it on the customer's dock or storage facility. So depends on how you want to define "work" and "physical capabilities"

Cased items are generally kept under 80lbs max, and most are like say a case of soup or toilet paper ... times 1800-2400 cases

i'm focusing on applying to OTR positions where i am out 30 days or more, i really enjoy using my physical strength, willing to load and unload as required, just don't want to bite off more than i can chew

Used to do it everyday on a two wheel dolly. And I weigh less than you. You'll be fine

Push and Pull A 500 #Barrel or drum of liquid....it can be shipped without a pallet. Sometimes I have to slide one a couple of feet to the tailgate when there is no dock so the lift truck can grab it.

You don't slid them, you put on your gloves, lean against it, then turn the drum in the direction you want it to go
If you are quick, it can easily be put on a pallet jack.

Heck that's a piece of cake.Im small and I use to work in a candy factory and soda place moving pallets all day long.But some of the places probably more then not uses an electric jack.Better find out about that.

great catch--good reader, good brain!

ODFL looks like a fantastic company, however they want 12 months OTR experience and/or apply with a partner/get matched by them--definitely not for me--so i need to reconsider ODFL after i am more experienced

the little ones are not getting left behind, one way or another...
