When we some day look back on our life, we all will have some regrets for some dream we didn't chase. Many people I went to school with have not ventured far from their zip code in all these years like I have. My regret will be I didn't venture even more. I've enjoyed different types of trucking, living in another country, visiting many countries, living in several different states. Go for your new goal; looking at the big picture, you won't regret it.

Never had a desire for the "ice road", but my buddy did and followed through and has had a fulfilling life. Last contact with him, he had purchased a beachfront condo in Vietnam and kicked back with some hottie he met there; he changes hotties pretty often. He's older than me & still planning his next adventure.

    tow614 Thanks this.

^^^ lol that's awesome. Good for him! As the saying goes, you're only as old as you think you are.

Now, how did he even start on the ice road? To me I feel like anymore that'd just be a pipe dream. After the TV series, they gotta be getting hundreds of applications in. If I were to do it, I don't even know where I'd start. Is it as simple as calling a trucking company up by one of the Canadian or Alaskan ice roads and saying. "How do I go about getting a job up there"? Lol.

For me it's not even about the money as much as the adventure. I love snow. I love driving in it. Even in the truck. Ill be on the roads when most are playing it safe at the truck stops. Lol. The intimidation factor is just pretty huge I guess. Lol

I really don't know how he did it. He went to Fairbanks and made some contacts somehow.
A few companies haul freight to Alaska, but don't know about the rider program; Fairchild Freight and System Transport.

I say go for it. My son leaves to go in the army in about six months . As soon as he does me and my wife ate going to do the same thing .. I look at it like this you can stay and work a local gig and pay on a house until you 65 or so , or do this and save save save and in a few years pay cash for a house and take it easy! Good luck with whatever you deside to do. I have a very good friend at Melton and he loves it, don't have to kill yours self to make a really good check.

Hmmmmmmm. Sounds like an early mid-life crisis to me. And take the wife off her $30/hr dental hygienist gig to team?? Wel-l-l-l, consider both of you asking for a six month leave of absence so that once you come to your senses you both have your great jobs waiting for you. I know of a gal local who quit her $30/hr hygienist spot to live her dream, buy a restaurant she had loved working there as a teenager. Now she and her driver husband (formerly Maverick, BTW) lost the restaurant and are in real deep do-do.

    So, my recommendation is don't.

In the meantime, read: http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...new-drivers/169873-otr-pay-poverty-wages.html thread started by Surfer Joe.

(I'm not against adventures. When 16, bicycled LA-Minnesota alone, in 20's with a girlfriend canoed the Mississippi from Minneapolis to New Orleans, a year ago spent six months tooting around the country with 3 dogs in the car. Have many, many more. But I recommend see if you can take six month leave--both of you.)

but they rarely go further west than IL. I live in Hilliard Ohio, western suburb of Columbus, and rarely get further than MI or IN.

Ok what I see from your post that MIGHT be an issue with the OTR companies is that you only have run very few states. Many companies will consider you still at "trainee status" unless you can prove more then 3-4 states driven in in last 1-2 years. If I misread your post forgive me;) best of luck.

Nothing wrong with want to do something different for awhile. Some people get board with what they are doing, seeing the same sites every day.

who said she got paid 30 bucks and hr OR that she was a hygienest? i said dental assistant but never specified what area. she works at the front desk, occasionally going in the back to help the Dr. and she gets 18 an hr, not 30....not saying 18 is anything to sneeze at, just setting the story straight. and no midlife crisis here. i enjoy my freedom on the road. isnt that why most driver, or most real drivers get into this business. they enjoy the open road?

Love Hoekstra, 5 years good record, new Pete, home every night and the wife 'only' makes $18/hr. Bored. Okay. Okay. Don't listen to us, 'wookie. Throw it all away. Someone else will pick it all up. No problem!

    Heh-heh...
