Hello!
Had turbo blew up on my Volvo ('01 D12 920k miles). Stopped right away and saw flames under cab by main exhaust pipe.Pulled out fire extinguisher, called 911,
but fire stopped as fast as started (oil ignited, maybe pipe got broken?).
What else to do besides replacing turbo and inspecting frame/lines/wires:
-replace mounting studs,gaskets,clamps,
-replace air filter,
-clean air intake/CAC, how to do it (water, air under pressure?),
-clean exhaust system,
-change oil?
I am posting here, it's not Volvo specific, so maybe somebody else will have use in future.
Thank You for all answers!!!
Mark

Well i would just replace turbo gaskets its nice if you replace the nuts just to be safe definately replace the Ir filter and inspect turbo pipe and clamp also there is two boost o rings that mount on the down pipe going to the cac replace those as well . As far as youre CAC volvo has a good mount its vertically I've replaced a ton of turbos on volvo and what u want to do is remove the bottom pipe to drain the oil and the before starting remove the top pipe going to intake and rev it up a couple of times so it blows out mething thats stick as far as the exhaust system u dont need to do nothing with it let me know if u need something else.

I'd start with visual inspection, checking turbo for play, oil leaks.
If really turbo goes bad it throws oil it intake of engine and it may rev up and blow, but not fire like you say.
but sometimes turbo throws oil in exaust pipe and it may caught fire. fortunatly not too much oil and no oxygen to burn for long time, but people say there were accidents when sleeper may be ignited too.
So my advice - change turbo, gaskets and exaust pipe.mp4694330 Thanks this. -
Send the CAC to a radiator shop to be cleaned, tested and painted. Don't try to do it yourself.
Remove and clean ALL of your intake air hoses. Don't forget to thoroughly clean the inside of your air cleaners and replace the air filters.mp4694330 Thanks this. -
Thank You, but why paint?
It's new, just installed in January. -
As I understand it, they will dunk it in an acid bath and remove the paint as part of the reconditioning process. You really want it done by a shop if the compressor wheel was damaged. You don't want to risk any of that making its way into your engine. If the compressor wheel wasn't damaged in the failure, then you might be able to skip sending the CAC to the shop.mp4694330 Thanks this.

And answer from my PM by sender permission.Thank You, sir!
When most turbos go like that they can send metal through the air to air and back up to the air filter. When this happens you need to replace the air filter, check all the intake piping for any metal debris. Same goes for the air to air piping, this needs to be checked. The metal from the turbo generally doesn't make it to the engine, but it will be in the air to air. It needs to be replaced! No cleaning will ever guarantee all the metal got out. The only time you can just clean an air to air is if the turbo only leaked oil into it. In your case I don't know how much internal turbo damage there was, if any. As far a turbo mounting studs go, that would be nice, but they don't always like to come out. As long as the threads are in good shape they will be fine, just use NEW nuts for sure!!!

we use to drill intercooler bottom with small bit to let oil out (to avoid self rev up after restart) and after that plumb this hole with small bolt

hello, i got volvo VNL 670, year 2017. Back in december gave it to mechanic because of engine derate issue. they changed fuel water separator and changed CAC pipe. within two months, engine light came up again, and engine derated, mechanic now suggesting to replace CAC. would need advice, whats going on with engine? is there any relation of CAC replacement with CAC pipe or its just normal wear tear? market is crazy and seems im paying mechanic $4-5 grnads every second month.

This thread is 9yrs-old and not the same setup as yours. You’ll probably want to stick with the thread you already started, so everything relevant is in one place.
