I have been reading through a bunch of tthreads and there are so many people upset and frustrated cause they got sent home from training..
Before you even applay to any company.. it is wise to run a background check on yoursellf.. that way you k.ow exactly what is on there and to make sure there is no false stuff on there.. if you had an arrest from 25 years ago and don't think it will show up and it does, well, itmy not have been a big deal had you told them, but since they flu.d it and you didn't tell them, it is not a big issue..

Also, get your employement history.. you can do that several ways, just check around on line and find what works for you.. because, again, if you said you started at company x. In May of 2001 and it comes out in there search it was June, well not it can be an issue..

Keep in mind, part of the truck drivers job is doing logs and paperwork, you don't want to give them a reason to believe you can't do it by not being able to fill out your employment history correctly, accurately and honestly...

Also, it will be much better to be turned down at the start, then after you get there... They accept you on the merit of your application.. but, when you get there, that may be when your background check or employment history comes back.. and if you forgot something, or something was just a bit off, like starting in June instead of May, then you may get sent home...

It is better to paint a worse picture of yourself and let them discover your better, then to paint a pretty picture and let them find a blemish.

So, just run a background check and get your employment history.. and then fill out the applications honestly...then, if they accept you you won't have to worry about them sending you home because of something on your app or from your past..

If I can't remember when I started a job ten years ago shouldn't be a deal breaker with a company and if it is then they must not really need drivers

Going into trucking has become as fine tooth combed just as going into the U.S. military, law enforcement, security, corrections, security, firefighting, along with getting into the nuclear field.

For each and every one of these fields, one must be super clean and then some. In one respect, this is fully understandable. On the other side of the coin, it can be considered "going overboard". It really is a tough question.

Years ago, I was in the U.S. Navy, a total of 8 years. A lot of the people that were serving back then might have been barred today with the tighter standards and restrictions. The same thing has happened with the trucking industry.

Years ago, I can remember when people had a difficult time finding a job they would go out and get a license to drive a truck. Quite often, they would find a job, either local or OTR and stick with it for many years.

They would "get lost" by going out on the road, made sure that they got their loads delivered, and kept at it year after year. Quite often, their health and well being was in bad shape. However, it was not an issue at the time.

Today, these same identical truck drivers would NOT make it past the recruiters office, the D.O.T. physical, or would get weeded out in orientation. TIMES HAVE CHANGED!!

I also recommend printing out all a copy of your online application prior to hitting the submit button so you can take it with you to orientation. I have heard several companies have applicants fill out another hard copy application upon arrival at orientation so they can check for discrepancies.

Times have changed.. and with the internet, it is much easier for companies to do a complete check on a driver.. in the old days, you would have to pay someone to make phone calls and if a business went out of business they may have had to just take your word.. not today.. they have many avenues to get the information easily online and through services.. they can easily check public records on individuals and on businesses..

You may make it to orientation, but that doesn't mean they have your background check back.. and, so there you are all evicted only to be sent home... Has, never happened to me, but, it has happened to many many others that I believe it it worth the extra effort and caution.. also, if they say something did not check out, I have my own records...

Then you may want to find a different carrier.

It is not unreasonable for a trucking company to want to careful check your employment history before entrusting you to $200,000 worth of equipment and hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of cargo.

The Op is spot on that you should check your own information first. You can get your employment history from the Social Security Administration using the form at http://www.socialsecurity.gov/online/ssa-7050.pdf

Not true...they want an individual that is capable of accepting a huge responsibility....If you can't remember dates and are unwilling to try and make sure that you are being accurate on your app , then they want a driver willing and capable to do just that....in other words a mature (read adult) individual...not a person who says it's not my fault I can't remember...you look it up.....or that ever popular "victim syndrome" so evident today.

Any suggestions on places to get these checks done? I've tried two and they have found nothing on me when I KNOW there should be atleast one thing on there if not a couple. Are there any that are typically used in the industry?

I already posted a link for employment history(http://www.socialsecurity.gov/online/ssa-7050.pdf).

For criminal background checks that is different for each state. I’m from Michigan and here you can do it online at http://apps.michigan.gov/ichat/home.aspx for a $10 dollar fee.

For New York see http://www.criminaljustice.ny.gov/ojis/recordreview.htm (Google is your friend as I found it easily searching for “criminal background checks New York”).
